Is hacking a PSP as hard as it was a year ago?

Well, this is annoying. I bought a used PSP-1001 that appears to be in excellent condition - not a scratch on it. It currently has Sony OFW 3.71 installed.
I tried copying a few different CFWs to the folder /PSP/GAME/UPDATE, but when I try to install them, I see a message "The memory stick could not be read" (080010005).

I've tried formatting the mem stick and that makes no difference. I've tried doing a network upgrade, and the latest OFW seems to download and save to the mem stick, but again, conks out during the install process with the error message above.

A Google search tells me this could be a faulty memory stick, but I've tried copying a 500-MB video file to the mem stick, and the PSP plays it back just fine. I can also put dozens of JPEG photos on the memstick, and there's no issue there either.

Could the mem stick have some fault that lets the PSP play MP4s and JPEGs, yet won't let you install either an OFW or a CFW? I don't see how that could be...

A local guy with a Pandora's battery helped me get my PSP upgraded to a CFW 6.60
Last night I installed emulators for the 2600, 7800, and Lynx. After customizing the button inputs, I am very happy with the results. Stella runs great on my PSP, and I spent an hour last night and a couple more this morning playing some homebrews and fave ROMS.

I highly recommend setting up a used PSP if you want some portable Atari action... MUCH better than a touchscreen phone or tablet.

Never mind, late to the party. I was going to give warning about that 3.71 unit since I had the same issue but I missed the end of the thread.

I've since added emus for the 5200, Vectrex, Coleco, and Intellivision. I have to admit that the PSP really does a great job of handling the 8-bit era machines.

It sure does! :)

When I had mine, I played a lot of NES on it. The button layout was perfect for Mike Tyson's Punchout!!

I got my emulators running w/o hacking firmware.
You just need HBL - Half Byte Loader, it's a singed software which enable you to load homebrew
And emulators, some dont work, but most do.
Atari 2600 works fine in OFW v6.39
so far I got to work Final Burn (no sound), Atari 2600, Deadalusx64, uaepsp, Modo -mod tracker player, Picodrive, Vice, Neogeo CDZ.
good luck
