I've bought a MAME32UI emulator on CD for my PC(Windows7 64 bit). I wanted to start playing, but MAME doesn't accept my both usb controllers I own. (USB competition pro and a saitek gamepad)
Which joysticks are compatible with MAME32 and Windows7 64? Which one should I buy to solve the problem! Thanks for your answers!

My Logitech Dual Action gamepad works with MAME.

It's not quite precise enough for the likes of "Donkey Kong" and "Burger Time" (you're better off using your keyboard arrow keys), but it's excellent for most games.

Also, are you sure that "Enable joystick input" is checkmarked in your settings? Do your gamepads work with other emulators?

Any controller that's recognized by windows should be recognized by MAME. Like mbd30 said, you have to enable it in MAME.

Also, he can go into Control Panel (classic view)and then Game Controllers to test if his controller is working at all.

Agreed, why would anyone buy Mame? I mean, if you've found out about it then you're likely to have done so on the net. As such, you'd know it was free - right?

Anyway, I use a gamepad on my PC for Mame, and it works fine. Just make sure it's configured and working in Windows, and then enabled the joystick in Mame. Then - the final bit - you must configure it in each game.

I'm not sure how Mame runs from a CD though - where does it store the config files?

Oh well. :)

As others have said, any USB comtroller that works in Windows should be picked up by Mame. Mame needs to be configured but the config files won't be updated on the CD.

Dump the entire CD or multiple CDs to the hard drive, keep the same folder structure. Turn off Read only in all the config files. There is the Mame main config file, save files and another one somewhere. Just turn off the Read Only box for all the files to be sure you catch all the configuration files. Finally reconfigure the controls in the Mame Menu.

after years claiming here and there, finally found here a good joipad :
www.RooBixWorld.com
joipad is great but delicate..I broke the stick soon and replaced the stick (and the ball) with a metallic one...but I repeat, the joipad is ok ...I use it for shootemups of the good old times, and very easy to program, only 2 easy steps and games immediately recognise the stick.

I use a cheap pc multi button analog joypad from `GAME` store, one of those with turbo and analog on/of button.I agree that it should not matter what the joypad is -if its usb and you have selected joystick in mame settings it should work,if not you could try another usb port.
PS of course remember to plug usb joypads in before starting mame or any emulator so it can be detected.

I have a few that I use:

* My primary - for now - is a SmartJoy USB adapter for Playstation. I can use almost any PS1/PS2 pad or my favorite Street Fighter II Anniversary stick! :)

* My next pad is a wired XBox 360 controller. Works perfect with any M$ operating system from XP on:

* My new favorite controller - which I don't even have yet - is the X-Arcade Tankstick! (My Christmas present coming soon! Girlfriend made me buy it last week since it was on sale at $30 off):

* Not MAME but I also have an Intellivision and Atari 2600 adapter for those emulators.

* I still have one but I don't use it unless I'm traveling with the laptop but the cheapo $5 USB controllers that look like PS2 pads work fine too:

Hope you find one you like. :)
