So I have been investigating M.U.G.E.N. as a way of playing hard to find characters in a fighting game. It looks kinda cool and I have toyed with the program and tweaked the controls so I can play it, but has anyone here used M.U.G.E.N. before? I have one or two minor questions.

(And before you ask, yes I have looked online but there are millions of sites devoted to this and I have not yet been able to find my answers. It's a huge community out there)

How do I import characters I have downloaded and make them playable? I see the generic Kung Fu Guy that comes with the program and I see the KFG folder his stuff is in. If I download Homer Simpson or Mario and Luigi how can I get them to show up in the roster?

How do I change stages? I'm sure that's pretty easy but I can't wrap my head around it.

Finally, if I download characters from other fighting games, do they retain their powers? If I download Chun-li for this program, can she still do her spinning-bird-kick?

Those are all my questions. If anyone here is a M.U.G.E.N. aficionado and can give me a simple answer, or point me to a plainly explained site that explains it, I'd be appreciative.

It's a pretty cool program though.

Yeah, the whole point is that it's fully customizable. It's not so much that Chun-Li "retains" her moves, but that she's been given certain moves by whoever put that particular MUGEN character file together. Personally, I'd just go find a big fat 2GB+ torrent with a bunch of characters. But I think you just put the characters folder into some MUGEN\Chars folder & off you go? Not sure. I've never bothered with a single character before.

Thanks for the info Rex. It turns out the character I downloaded is not a good file. Various websites tell me I need to download the .dev version of a character file, create a folder in the "chars" directory in my MUGEN folder and then put "all of those files" including the .dev file into that folder to make the character appear. Unfortunately, the character I downloaded ends in a .cvs so obviously this is made for a different version of MUGEN than the program I got.

Crazy complicated this stuff.
