I've been wondering about the GP2X Caanoo for a while, and I'm still on the fence. Is is worth getting one? Is it better or worse than the GP2X Wiz? Is the emulation better or worse than a PSP with CFW?

The Cannoo has been discussed many times on this forum. Check out this recent thread for some info:

I really like the Caanoo and I favor it over my GP@X Wiz and Dingoo A320 personally.

I had gathered that by your previous posts in other topics. Since no one else here at AA seems to have touched/owned one, maybe you could tell me more?

(1)The Caanoo is on sale for $110. It is worth $110?
(2) My experiences with MAME on the PSP have been lousy. Is MAME on the GPX2 Caanoo any better?
(3) My non-MAME emulation experiences on the PSP have been pretty good. Is non-MAME emulation on the Caanoo better or worse than a CFW PSP?
(4) Reports on build quality vary. How well made is the Caanoo?
(5) Reports on the controls vary. How well do the controls work?
(6) I haven't read anything consistent about the quality of the TV/video output. How well does it work, and at what actual resolution is the video output?
(7) Is the rechargeable battery replaceable?
(8 ) Is USB the only way to recharge it?

Thanks for your help :)

(1)The Caanoo is on sale for $110. It is worth $110?
Definitely! I payed more with no regrets!
(2) My experiences with MAME on the PSP have been lousy. Is MAME on the GPX2 Caanoo any better?
I've not had time to play much but no issue with few tried so far.
(3) My non-MAME emulation experiences on the PSP have been pretty good. Is non-MAME emulation on the Caanoo better or worse than a CFW PSP?,
Again, I cannot give you comparison as I did not do the CFW PSP thing a lot, I got tired always having to get latest CFW since the Caanoo is open source that is not an issue, I have been very happy with several non MAME emulators.
(4) Reports on build quality vary. How well made is the Caanoo?
Obviously not on par with Sony or Nintendo handhelds BUT better than the cheaper Dingoo A320 and much better than the original GP32/GP2X. In short, it seems sturdy enough to me.
(5) Reports on the controls vary. How well do the controls work?
While they took getting use to I have no complaint, a light touch does the job, no problem with control in my opinion and I have huge hands / fingers.
(6) I haven't read anything consistent about the quality of the TV/video output. How well does it work, and at what actual resolution is the video output?
Not sure, I don't have a tv out cable. See last link for all specs though.
(7) Is the rechargeable battery replaceable?
Not without taking it apart.
(8 ) Is USB the only way to recharge it?
YEP, unless I am missing something.
Best of all though is the support and community, also recently two starter packs have been put together, minus roms pretty much all all the usable apps/emulators can be freely downloaded and slapped onto your sd card. You wont be disappointed especially after checking out these links where I leave you to discover the rest yourself.

Thanks for all of the info. Play Asia dropped the price again today to $88. I don't think I can resist at that price :)

I'm still waiting for my Caanoo to arrive from Play Asia, but the Wiz I bought from Think Geek arrived today. After reading so many mixed opinions about the Wiz I didn't have high expectations, especially about the build quality and the controls. I have been pleasantly surprised. So far the Wiz is much better than what I had been lead to believe by reading various online comments and reviews.

I haven't gotten far into the emulation yet, but what I've seen so far is at least on par or better than what I experienced on my CFW PSPs.

Interestingly, I recognize the names of many of the PSP homebrew authors as the same developers of the Dingoo, Wiz, Caanoo, and Pandora emulators. The majority seemed to have ceased work on their PSP projects in 2009 when the Wiz and Dingoo hit the market.

It's far too early to tell if the Wiz and Caanoo will replace my CFW PSPs for portable emulation, but it seems like a possibility. These open source handhelds are much easier to deal with than constantly updating CFWs...
