1. Can anyone tell me what keypad buttons Protector or Protector SE use? In particular the keypad. The online instructions don't say explicitly if 1-9 are used. Only * and #.

2. This next one is a tough one to answer. If you take the procontroller and specifically target the D-Pad and the C-B-A main buttons, is it really that much of an improvement over the original two revisions of the standard controller? While at a con I played on a Jag with a standard controller (don't remember if it was a B or G) and then had a chance to handle/use the procontroller. Honestly I didn't feel a huge amount of difference between the two. Up until that point I was expecting something drastic - like the difference between a Gen 1 and Gen 2 xbox controller. Really it's got to be the same size, the dpad is a little different.. I just don't know for non-procontroller games if it would be worth the price? I'd be interested to hear your opinions on the matter.

Protector uses the keypad 1-4 for selecting upgrade items in the shop.

During gameplay, key 4 and/or 6 are used for hyperspace.

I won't go in details about your next question, all I can say is: get a Pro Controller as it's great, it can be used with a lot of games.
Be quick though, before the last ones are bought up by people who hack them to make rotaries :|

The pro-controller is not a must have item IMHO. Comparing the two controllers based on just the d-pad and CBA, I do prefer the Pro-Controller for the buttons only, I think they are more responsive and easier to depress if only slightly.

With Protector, an advantage of the Pro-Controller is that you can use the shoulder buttons to activate Hyperspace.

Obviously, just in terms of functionality, the Pro-Controller is a better controller to own, but I still stand by my opinion that it's not such a significant upgrade as to qualify as a must have replacement for the original, when you factor in the price of buying the Pro. The lack of a turbo function literally kills this controller in comparison to similar upgrades from any competing systems, and really baffling considering the Turbo feature was a staple of controller upgrades since NES. I would have rather had Turbo instead of the extra buttons honestly, it's that important, and STANDARD, a feature.

Do first-party controllers with turbo buttons exist ? I was under the impression that turbo was a common feature for all consoles, but only found on third-party controllers.

Most original controllers do not have turbo at all, other than the TG-16. But yes, first party had turbo feature, especially on NES. Remember the Advantage and MAX? They were Nintendo brand controllers. They both had turbo, the Advantage even had adjustable turbo for each button. I remember that Sega Genesis pro-stick was first party as well, with Turbo, and I think that thing was available from launch or very near.

That's why I will never really hold up the Jaguar Pro-Controller in the great light that it is normally shown here. Yes, it's definitely an upgrade from the original jag-pad, but it's the same size, so it didn't receive any ergo-upgrades which is fine, I like the way it feels, but alot of people did not like the large size of the jag-pad, this is fact and a common complaint. It lacks Turbo, which is extremely frustrating when it would have been an awesome feature especially for Raiden or Trevor McFur. The extra buttons are nice, but since most Jaguar games lack complete button customization, those extra buttons don't really ever work exactly like you would want them too, since they are always hard-mapped to specific keypad keys.

Saying all that, I always use my Pro Controllers when I'm playing Jaguar because I own a couple and they are better than the originals, but I'm not convinced that they enhance my gameplay.
