Night Driver: 78!

Night Driver (1980) (Atari).png

Only 3 crashes to attain that score.

Shit dude, nice one! I still can't figure how my scores don't go any higher. I think I just discovered I'm playing the first game instead of the second.

Aw man, yeah, should have paid attention. Let's try to raise Crypts and Night tonight! Might give Sub a go too, finally. I've been waiting to really try that game.

Current tally below. Now Night Driver makes sense and what a sexy score! I was playing the wrong game. That one curve is KILLER though. I was swearing up a storm. I really like Crypts, it's a lot of fun once it's mapped. The graphics confuse the hell out of you until you know where you're going, then it's a lot of fun. Damn hard though, can't be possible to get to the last level and back.

Spike's Peak: 110,900
Night Driver: 69
Crypts of Chaos: 3,843

Improvements in 3 games today:

Spike's Peak - 57,100 [frustrating funkiness, with a death-dance-shuffle too]
Crypts of Chaos - 4287 [time=score, this'll take a looong time to really master, oh Snail-Lord]
Submarine Commander - 1575 [can't yet anticipate the fast boats by radar]

And, of course, I keep scoring 70 on Night Driver - Every Other Freaking Game I Play! - so I have hopes of adding a couple more points to my best before the competition is up [afraid this set of paddles might not survive, though]

I've noticed that the timer doesn't always start right away. One time, I scored 4 points before the timer started.

Just a little help with Night Driver...more to help with the frustration: Play until you don't have a chance of beating your score. For example: I scored 78 in the game that I crashed 3 times. Therefore, when I'm playing, I keep count of how many times I crash. Once I crash for the 4th time, I start over.

Yes, that one hairpin turn is the killer. The rest of the track isn't too bad.

Submarine Commander 5A/B: 1540
I still haven't really figured out the radar on this one :ponder:

Night Driver 2A/B: 74
It seems like the key in this one is to anticipate that one killer turn (that repeats thru the game) and slow down right before it.

Night Driver tip. I noticed that the hideous curves from hell appear roughly every 7 points you score.

New scores:
Night Driver: 58 still cannot navigate that 's' turn without a crash.
Spikes peak: 21350 made it through one time. Still a dumb game. But I can't help but press that reset button over and over and over.
Crypts of Chaos: 4246 Like it a lot. Just mapped out first 2 levels. Got lost on level 3. Damn gold slimes.

Yo, Vo-dog, I'll send you some Spike's tips too so you can blast that score. Once you get used to the shitty controls and collision it's not so bad.

3 new Saturday scores

Crypts of Chaos

5,221

Made it out of the crypts! Highest rank of "Noble" 4,000+
(notice there's no creatures blocking my way?) Bonus was only "150" or so.

Spikes Peak

130,800

I take it back, level 2 is the hardest for me. 1 and 3 are about the same.
Oddly I lost 2 lives in level 1. DOH!!

Submarine Commander

1,725

It's easier to sit still!, the enemy ships don't target you half as much.

Wow, Jacob! I'm going to really have to up my Spike's game! I'd like to break a million in it, but 200K is a good goal.

Played Crypts for the first time today. I like it!

I had to stop and take care of my baby, but that's okay. :)

Thanks Stan!
1 mill is impossible for me... level 2 is very tough, all levels are actually...
THIS GAME IS PRETTY MUCH LIKE CLIMBING MOUNTAINS, ONLY TOUGHER. ;) I like it, in a weird
disfunctional kinda way.

How bout an extra score before quittin tonight! ;)

spikes peak
159,650

5 complete run throughs, at the end of your 2nd or 3rd run, you get 1 free life!

Two scores to report so far:

Submarine Commander: 890

I got this score the first time I played and haven't come close since. I like torpedo games but I keep getting hit for fuel points and I'm not sure where the hits are coming from. I'll have to read the manual more closely.

Sub890.jpg

Night Driver: 60

I can't navigate those crazy S turns. Even when I was a kid, I'd go slow motion frame-by-frame and STILL hit something! This run I actually managed one of those turns full speed which finally got me a 60 score.

When you see the arrow on the bottom right hand side, move your joystick in the opposite direction of the way the arrow is pointing. There should be a beeping sound when the arrow is on the screen. The beeping stops when you are safe. Usually I have to make the avoidance maneuver right at the start of the game, but then I can settle in for some target shootin'.
