I recently discovered how awesome dos games are, and Instead of trying every single game good or bad, What are the best DOS games that are freeware/shareware?

I love Xolo (like a fancy Star Castle) and Jumpman. Also, if you can find them, any of Champ Games arcade games are great (Champ Kong, Ms. Pac-Em, etc.)

I'm pretty partial to EGA Trek. One Must Fall 2099 is a neat fighting game.

Definitely the Champ Em games.

If you can, get Pharoah's Tomb. Very fun puzzle game.

I've always been partial to the Commander Keen series.

I have to agree here. Almost anything by Apogee Software is great for the time. Just a partial list:
Commander Keen
Wolfenstein 3D
Arctic Adventure
Pharaoh's Tomb
Biomenace
Star Gunner
Kingdom of Kroz
Crystal Caves
Secret Agent
and others, and later
Doom, Duke Nukem, etc.

Sooo so so SO many great DOS games.

All the old Lucasarts adventures; Monkey Island 1&2, Sam and Max, Maniac Mansion
Quarantine
Duke Nukem 1, 2, 3D
Krypton Egg
that sonofabitch helicopter game I can never remember the name of (not choplifter)
Redhook's Revenge
Doom 1, 2
Heretic
Terminal Velocity
Raptor
Scorched Earth
The Incredible Machine 1, 2, 3, and so on
Hocus Pocus

Shoot, just find a huge DOS game torrent and go ape.

Yeah, I used to play that. I still crank it up every now and then.

Yep, I think Apogee was ahead of their time. I mean, to get full-screen mostly smooth video scrolling on my old XT PC was quite impressive. Not to mention the very awesome and colorful games they had.

I also really enjoyed the Sierra adventure games. King's Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry and Conquests of Camelot were my favorites. But Police Quest not so much.

Still remember picking up a 3.5" floppy disk of EGA Trek at a flea market in Tampa when I was a kid for a dollar. Played the heck out of it but could never beat it on the Admiral level. All the Duke Nukem games were great as shareware.

Blake Stone for an early FPS and Wacky Wheels for a good Mario Kart clone.

Rise of the Triad was also lots of fun.

Yeah, I like that game, too. I thought it would make a neat conversion to 2600. If I were to get into 2600 coding, I think that would be my first attempt.

Paratrooper
Digger
Moon Bugs
Bushido:The Way of the Warrior

Another very well done game.

So much 80's goodness.

I have an entire DVD of those old games that I've collected. I set up the disc so that you could just copy its entire contents to the root of an old PC's hard drive, or C: on DOSBox, including AUTOEXEC.BAT, mouse.com, MSCDEX.EXE and some root DOS tools. It boots, loads the drivers, and opens QuickMenu, all configured with gaming, productivity, education and programming categories.

I had to look up QuickMenu... that looks slick! I might do something similar now.
