The launch systems in Europe had Playstation 2 compatibility.
Wasn't this achieved via software emulation and not including PS2 hardware?

NOA has announced they're releasing this stateside later this month with New Super Mario Brothers Wii and a Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack CD for $150. Will be black and include the usual Wiimote Plus and Nunchuk in the same color.

Goodbye to GameCube support. :(

Great, strip out features and not lowering the price on a console that has weakening sales. What are they thinking?

Not being able to use Gamecube controllers will really screw people who want to play SSB:B.

The Emotion Engine was emulated, the PS2's GPU wasn't and was still included. It was a hybrid of both emulation and hardware, and when the GPU was removed to drive down production cost, PS2 compatibility was the sacrifice.

If it was done strictly through emulation, they'd of never removed it.

Yep, just read about it on Go Nintendo: http://gonintendo.co...story&id=163373. It was also reported that Australia would be getting the bundle and it wouldn't surprise me if its release wasn't worldwide.

I'm really surprised at the price point as I had thought Nintendo might drop it down closer to $100 rather than staying at the usual $150 asking price.

I think $99 will be the final pricing during the final transition to Wii U.

Shame about GameCube support. Hate to say it, but I use my Wii more as a GameCube with component video than a Wii. ;-)

Yeah... this is kind of like the Gen3 in a way. Maybe the Wii secretly got sold to Majesco. They put out enough titles for it, anyway.

Seriously though, who wants this? There are literal tons of Wii's around for sale still, lightly used (how many people bought one, bought three games, and never touched it again because it didn't do what they thought it would?), "Dead" ones that just need a little cleaning or a new disc drive, and I bet there will be some pretty cheap unopened NOS original-style Wii's to compete with the new nerfed one, and win, because the new one has nothing going for it. It'd have to get pretty cheap before even I sprung for one. I'll give you 40 for it, just as a backup in case mine dies, but then I lose all my saves, and don't even feel like starting again in most titles anyway. Bleh!

The average person buying a Wii for the first time as 2011 comes to a close could care less that GCN compatibility has been removed. The people that cared about GCN compatibility (Or would have GCN controllers around that they might like to use for a few Wii games), by and large, bought one years ago.

Most people buying these things aren't even going to be aware they're buying a revision since it looks so similar to the original and twould've never even used the GCN features of the thing (And thus, won't even know such features were eliminated). That's precisely why Nintendo has trimmed these features to cut cost.

This wasn't intended for people like us. It was intended for those last few holdouts in the general public that might finally get spurred on to buy one of these things when it hits $99 next year and play a few games (The same reason the $20 Nintendo Selects line exists), and to prepare the Wii for a future as Nintendo's budget priced entry level gaming console when the WiiU takes over the reigns as Nintendo's premier home console.

It makes sense.
