I just received an untested four port 5200 through eBay. The controllers are shot, missing many rubber buttons, etc. However, the console does output video when hooked up. It came with about a half dozen loose games. What's odd to me is that the video is fine, but there's no sound. But because I can't use the controller to start a game, I'm unsure whether the sound is faulty or whether there's no sound during the intro screens and/or attract mode. Joust has a real attract mode, but there's no sound. So until I can scare up a working controller (and I hope the problem is with the controller and not the port), I'm stuck wondering if the sound is bad. If there is a game with sound in the intro or attract mode, I may have that cart to test. Any help appreciated!

you can start a game with a bent paperclip

if you are careful from the left count over 4 at the top and the second from the right pin 7 and short them that is start then you could plug in a controller and see if the directions work

That worked great, thanks! I felt a little bit like Matthew Broderick getting a free pay phone call in War Games . Plus, the sound does work and so does the joystick on the controller.

Or instead of a paper clip goto radioshack and get a small push button. Attach that to the wire instead of a paper clip so you can start everytime. Bettet than a paper clip.

radioshack no longer carries the 15 pin female plugs so a switch wouldnt really help

how would you line up 2 wires and then press a button i guess if they are long enough you could hit it with your toe

I saw 15 pin female at my local radioshack. Anyhow a busted controller (if good cable) already has a 15 pin connector. Just remove the controller from case and the other end has wires that attach to the buttons.
