Sega has announced that the game will be making it to pretty much every platform you give a damn about by the end of the year, unless you give a damn about something that’s not XBLA, PSN, PC, iPhone, iPad, Android or Windows Phone. Notable by its exception is the platform plenty of people still technically give a damn about, the Wii. Wii. Is the Sega/Nintendo enmity making a late comeback? (No).

Everyone else, on the plus side, will get both sets of audio, Japanese and English.

Minus the Wii being skipped over, that's still pretty cool news. Not sure if I will buy it as the Sega CD version is obtainable relatively cheap, but still..

They say a WiiWare release couldn't handle the audio quality, but the iPhone can?

The 3DS has WAY BETTER audio output than the iPhone (too my ears, at least). There's no excuse to NOT put that game on the 3DS.

And at the end of the day when you really look at it its just another Sonic release. To me Sonic has been done to death. I know i wont be getting it.

Just buy Sonic Gems Collection, then you can play Sonic CD on your Wii.

I'm pretty sure they're talking about storage limitations and feel like they would have to compress the music tracks beyond an acceptable level to release it via WiiWare.

This. As much as I like the Wii, Nintendo was nuts to release a home console in 2006 with 512 MB of storage, and even more nuts not to include a few more gigs of flash memory as manufacturing costs went down and PS3 and Xbox hard drives got bigger and bigger.

the only Sonic game I'm interested in is Sonic Generations. now that looks awesome. Sonic gameplay with modern graphics. no 3rd person, free-roaming, 3D BS.

The only thing about this theory is that there are already several CD-based games available in the Virtual Console section. The Turbo DUO Dracula X: Rhondo of Blood, Gradius II Gofer, and Lords of Thunder, to name a few, all sound great. I'm not sure I would buy that excuse even if they ended up publicly stating that as a reason. Maybe they are simply riding the "time to abandon the Wii" train that a lot of publishers are doing these days? Who knows.. :(

Now this is awesome! Now why can't they do a classic-style Mega Man game like that? I'd be all over it. :)

What, no 3DS version either? As much as I don't like this game (and that's saying something considering what a huge Sonic fan I am), plenty of other people seem to, and it would give 3DS owners something worth sinking their teeth into.

Also, I heard someone say that Generations has no "3rd person, free-roaming, 3D BS". Actually, it does (sort of). Modern Sonic plays just like he did in Unleashed/Colours, so his stages are equal parts 2D/3D gameplay. Only Classic Sonic is totally sidescrolling.

Unless it has the cut second level, I'm not interested. I already have enough Sonic compilations and the original game my Sega CD. Meh!

Virtual Console is not part of WiiWare. The maximum game size allowed on WiiWare is 40 MB. Also of note, the minimum sales threshold (needed to be met by your game before Nintendo will actually pay you) is lower for games under 16 MB. DSiWare has a 16-MB size limit and no thresholds.

Maybe the size limit thing is also why this isn't coming to 3DS. I don't know the 3DS limits, though.

Let's Golf 3D takes up about 196 MB. Not sure if that's the limit or not, assuming there is a limit.

But you can play Sonic CD on your Wii.

You just have to get the GameCube Sonic Gems Collection compilation. It has Sonic CD on it I believe...

The coolest thing is "both soundtracks". It will be awesome to play it with the original Japanese soundtrack, then switch over and play it with the USA version, to compare. I've heard the orig soundtrack and never though Gamefan et al were being fair by docking points from the USA version review due to the change in music. But maybe when actually playing the game, the music does "fit" better. I'll buy this on Xbox live.

Sega publically said that the limit for WiiWare is 40MB and that they couldn't make it fit in that amount of space.

I'm not familiar with Let's Golf 3D (I can't even find it in a list of WiiWare titles?), but I assume 196MB's means that it was a multi-part experience with each component being bought seperately (Such as many of Taito's WiiWare releases). That's likely how they got around that limit.

Edit - Let's Golf 3D isn't even a WiiWare release. It's a E-Shop game for the 3DS, a system with 2 gigs of internal memory (4 times that of the Wii).

Oops. Forgot to mention it was a 3DS eShop title.

But this still proves that Sega has little excuse not to put Sonic CD onto the 3DS.

Is it just me, or is that a real 16:9 aspect ratio and not a squished screen?

Because that would be flippin' awesome. That's how classics should be ported. That's something worth paying money for.

Well, I'll be damned.

Top picture is Sonic CD rerelease "squished" to 4:3. Bottom picture is original Sega CD version at normal 4:3.

If you look at the HUD, it's definitely clear the remake is 16:9. The palmtrees also give it away a little.

Sorry that the picture is low quality. I just threw this together in MS Paint.
