The 8-Bit/5200 version/conversion isn't totally reversed. It's like many of the home conversions of DK where Kong is on the wrong side of the screen on the first board when compared to the arcade version. Mario still starts out on the left moving right though.
Its actually one of the better home versions IMHO.
