According to Sega, they are removing R-type from the Wii's Virtual Console channel on Sept. 30th. So if you have any interest at all, better grab it now.

A faithful port of the SEGA Master System version, R-Type was a revelation: this game was a paragon of old-school arcade difficulty, it helped define a generation of side-scrolling ship-based shooters, and I am happy to say that it is still dazzling how good these graphics looked on those eight little bits of the Master System.
The scale of the bosses still stands out, as you fight monsters that take up the entire screen (and more). Hilarious. Gamers have been comparing about the agonizingly slow growth of the North American VC library compared to the Japanese one for years, and now it's actually shrinking.
But in all truth, I was more disappointed when I discovered I could no longer buy SmashTV on XBLA.

Install the homebrew channel and then you can play R-Type whenever you like. 
I use the NES and PS1 releases on my Wii.

This is just the emulated SMS game, right? I can't remember if that funky 2D/2.5D remake was released on Wii or if that was XBLA.
