Hi everyone,

I'm a total newbie with retro gaming and my console collection has been growing slowley, just wondered if I could get a little advice about the underated Lynx.

i'm going to invest in an Atari Lynx (partly because I love the version of Rygar!!!!) I have seen one on ebay, do you reckon the package is worth it?

eBay Auction -- Item Number: 160658063629

Cheers all!

Assuming you get it for less than the Buy It Now price of £60, that looks really good. Personally, I'd rather emulate the system than actually play one (screens are lousy), but if you're collecting that looks nice.

Hey dude,

Thanks for the swift reply, I didnt think that was to bad for the price (but like i say i'm a newbie!) how high would you go?

It definitely is a great and much underrated handheld, which still has a solid fan base today, it´s also great to play on and the screen is not that bad at all (the Gamegear is worse). I agree that 60 pounds is a bit too much. I got mine for roughly a third and the Rygar cartridge for ca. 6 or 8 at most.

Oh, I guess I might go up to £30-£35 if I were you.
I'm not the best person to advise ya, though, since I'm in the USA and I'm not totally familiar with this particular system.
Hopefully somebody else will chime in.

Looks like a fine deal to me as long as you keep under 40 pounds, since thats about the price you have around here. I believe its more cheap in the USA, judging from other topics. A boxed Ninja Gaiden is definitely nice to have

This looks like a good grab. Not only will you get Rygar in the future - but you'll get two *excellent* games in Shadow of the Beast and Ninja Gaiden.

Also, playing the Lynx on the couch natively is much better than using an emulator on a laptop. No comparison.

I'll go with the majority here - the Lynx is an awesome handheld. My kids and I still play mine semi-regularly. Of course, I've been playing it a bit more since I got EOTB. :)

That looks like a fair bundle, as long as you can get it at a lower price.

As far as emulation goes, its just -ok-. I'm biased, I'll be the first to admit. Whether its my 800XL, my Atari ST's, Lynx, Jaguar, Falcon, etc,...there ain't nothin' like the real thing baby! :)

I'm normally for actual hardware over emulation, but when the "real thing" is a screen so washed-out you can barely see it... I'll just emulate that sucker & play from my couch on a crystal-clear 46" LCD like Schmudde unknowingly suggested.

I wouldn't pay the BiN. It's always kind of tough to judge these things, but perhaps $40-50 range would be ok. He says the screen has minor scratches, plus that Ninja Gaiden box looks like it was almost crumpled up at one point. A boxed Ninja Gaiden is kind of tough to find, but that one is in bad shape. The cool thing about a complete Ninja Gaiden is the poster manual, and I don't see that in the picture. The other two games are fairly easy to acquire boxed and aren't worth that much money.

Personally I like my Lynx stuff complete and boxed and I consider the value of the goods drastically reduced when they aren't complete. I'd have a hard time justifying $50 for that package.

Like everyone else has said the buy it now price is way off what its worth, maybe if it was NIB it would be worth that but loose no way. If you can get that for a good price go for it. The starting price though is what I payed for my boxed and in almost perfect condition lynx II... but then again it didn't have any games.

@ Rex Dart, if the screen of your Lynx is so washed out that you can barely see it, then maybe it's time for a new screen, because what you describe is not as it should be.

I agree. I can see how someone might say it is nothing like the LCD screens of today but it is far from barely visable. The Lynx screen doesn't have the contrast of say, the Turbo Express. However at least the Lynx screen doesn't keep ghost images on the display forever. :) That always annoyed me about the TG Express.
I had posted a while ago about the Lynx screen having 3 individual output sections. We can see on some units some sections being lighter than others. Ive had beat up Lynx units that had 2/3 lighter, some 1/3 lighter. Maybe Rex Dart's Lynx has all 3 sections going bad and the whole screen is lighter making him think the screen is made this way?

Yeah, I am also surprised by Rex Dart's comments. I have a Model I and a couple of Model IIs, and the screen is decent on all three, certainly not "washed-out looking".

Yeah? You may be right; mine is the only working Lynx I've ever handled. No clue where to find a new screen though.

I love the LYNX but really the screen isn't that great since it's not backlit evenly. I could see how it might appear washed out in some people's view, because you may need to adjust the brightness too much to get one side of the screen bright enough ya know.

What's the deal with a 'bad Lynx screen'? My Lynx screen is excellent, good visibility, clear graphics, much much better than the Game Boy screen (which was released at the same time)

I have seen five different Lynxes, all with equally decent screens.

Yeah, just search for LynxOsaka on this forum to see Lynx screenshots in bright sunlight on my bike.
