hi guys,
some of you know me now, I've had a Jaguar for a while but have only recently, within the last five years or so, begun exploring the wonders of its game collection. I've got 20 cartridge titles of (IMO) the best games and wondered what titles I should get for CD etc.

I was holding off on buying one as some of you know, as the price was looking a bit ridiculous but last week I succumbed to my urges (ooh er!) and ordered a refurbed unit via Best Electrical so I have a CD Drive on the way! I'm pretty excited to receive it even though the game library appears to be fairly small

Anyway bottom line is I'm entirely new and unaware/uneducated in the ways of Jaguar CD Homebrew and will welcome any tips or pointers. Think of me as a blank slate! I ordered the remake of Hover Strike and Battle Morph is also on the way along with a power supply, are there any other worthwhile titles I should invest in or is it all about the homebrew? And if so, how do I get into that? Cheers guys

Primal Rage, Myst, VidGrid, and the homebrew Downfall are my favorites in CD format. :)

Dragons Lair, Space Ace, and Brain Dead 13 are good if you like the laser disc games. The video is very compressed but they play really nice and I've always been a fan of that type of game. So I enjoy them.

Really the JagCD titles are actually pretty inexpensive (outside a couple of the FMV games and one or two other exceptions) and there is really no reason not to collect all or most of them. You already got two of the better ones coming though in Battlemorph and Hover Strike. I'm not up on the home brew titles for it so I won't be able to give you any advise there.

Although be aware, that on a PAL Jag these will not play correctly (I think Dragon's Lair doesn't run at all?). You can tell if your jag is NTSC or PAL by looking at it's power LED. Green = PAL Red = NTSC

A lot of the Homebrew stuff can be downloaded and burnt to a CD FoC! So there is really no reason to not try it all! Have a look at some of the games over on reboots site http://reboot.atari.org polished and fun, and for the price of a blank CD-R! bonus!

You may want to get yourself a Memory Track cart for save games and high scores for your CD Games.

If you are a masochist you could get yourself Highlander on the CD :)

Another fun game is Baldies (RTS type game)

Have fun

Apart from those already discussed I enjoy Iron Soldier II & World Tour Racing...

The one CD game I want but have yet to purchase is Primal Rage, I hear it's a good game but it usually goes just out of my price range on Ebay.

So really you are saying less than half the Jaguar CD's library is inexpsensive.. ;) :D

Haha pretty much. After I submitted that post I looked at my shelf that has my JagCD games and saw just how few games there actually are. So let me give this one more try; Battlemorph, Hover Strike, Myst, Baldies, Vid Grid, Highlander and Blue Lightening can all be had cheap and with their prices (and how few JagCD games there are) there is no reason not to pick them all up. Yes even Highlander. I'm serious........

I don't really like much on the JagCD and I've had one since launch. I've got most of the games, but the only ones I play really are Baldies and that one is frustrating since it will crash frequently. I was never a fan of Hover Strike: UL or Battlemorph, although if I had to choose between the two games I'd go with Battlemorph. I see the JagCD as a collectors item moreso than anything else, personally I would have fleshed out my Cartridge collection before investing in the CD.

fair enough, I have heard some negative stuff about the CD collection but to be honest I really like Cybermorph and so the thought of being able to play a better version just makes me really want to get one, if only to play that game! I have quite a few cartridge games and the only one left I want is Pitfall really, maybe bubsy. I'm not going to bother trying to buy them all, maybe that makes me less of a Jaguar fan but hey, I like the machine, but am not looking to own the entire collection, just the bits I want :)

Cool, I'm definitely interested in those vid disc ones they were a lot of fun on the Sega CD, such as the one where you ride a hover craft type thing through roads and alley ways etc, or supreme warrior, that was a classic lol. Oh and I assume as i have ordered my Jag cd from Best Electric in the US that it will be an NTSC one? Does that mean everything works on it?

Also thanks for the link, is that the best place to get Jag hombrew stuff? Any ones I should look out for that are of stand out quality at all?

Cheers for the responses so far guys, keep em coming! Also I will let you know when I get the drive, might do a little vid too

Its the best place to get Reboot's homebrew stuff :)

I don't think there is a single repository of homebrew stuff. I'd imagine people will post to forums like here when they have a new release, but prefer things to be distributed from their own sites (allows them to see how well something is doing etc).

Worth bookmarking the sites and just having a look on occasion see if anything new is popping up.

cool so there are other homebrew devs, know any others worth noting?

Also I was wondering, do I need the Jaguar CD Mem Track thing for battlemorph? Can you not save any data internally or anything? I assume as they run from disc its not possible where it was previously with Cartridges? With games like Battlemorph and iron soldier 2 can you save your progress?

Well there is also http://www.jagware.org If you look down a bit and on the left there is a box of links to other devs sites and their own stuff. There is also my site http://www.u-235.co.uk not much there at the moment, but hopefully there will be :)

Memory Track. Nope, if you want to save any progress or high scores from a CD Game, unless it offers codes that you type in to get to a specific level (quite a few do), you will need a memory track if you want it to save stuff like high scores etc etc. The CD Unit has no internal storage for such things.

Ok so your saying even if you have the track it still wont save progress? Just scores? If so that really sucks balls! That's one of the main reasons I can't play games from this era for too long because you can't often save your progress properly and have to complete the game in one sitting!

No, If you have a memory track AND the game supports saving progress, then it will save the progress. HOWEVER, a lot of games ALSO provide codes so you can still play them without needing a memory track.

oh I get it that's good then, but the codes won't remember your individual progress though will they? They will just let you access certain stages of the game right? This is a pisser as the mem track appears to be pretty crazy expensive at the moment. What an arse!!

Yeah that's pretty much it. I had a look and seems there are a couple on ebay in the US for less than £40 total at the moment. Can't remember how much I paid for mine, was years ago.

ok cool I might pick one up, just placed an offer on one. I also wanna get a pro controller but the price of those is even worse!! I need to look into which games utilise it, also I just found this:

http://www.telegames.com/worms.htm

slight side note; I didn't know this game was out on Jag, is it possible to get it at all? as I've never seen this on sale anywhere. Is it playable as far as worms go?

has anyone played this? How can I get hold of it? I loved the Maxx Cartoon show and if there is a game I'd love to try it, even if it is just a demo. Does anyone know anything about this project? If its still in dev? thanks

Try http://www.1632systems.co.uk or http://songbird-productions.com it is one of my favourite Jag games but at about £50 a cartridge it is not cheap.

cool thanks I kinda started out with Worms World Party on Dreamcast, seeing the gameplay of this original Worms I'm not sure if I'll entirely enjoy it but I might see if I can find it cheap.

I have placed an offer on a memory track so hopefully I'll get that too, I was just wondering does anyone know for sure if it saves your actual progress, score and level etc, for Hover Strike and Battlemorph? Or are they still just score only games?

I've played most JagCD stuff and the only game I'd *recommend* is Battlemorph. I think Baldies is cool if you already have a JagCD, but it starts a little slow and admittedly it's not the easiest game to get into. Primal Rage is interesting too, but the Saturn/PSX versions are much better.

Most other stuff I think is nice to check out for a few minutes, especially some of the alpha and beta games like BIWN and Varauna's Forces.
