ok so I've heard about this and seen footage, I did a search on AA boards and the latest was from sept 2009 when a bunch of guys discuss getting an uncorrupted version. So my question is, was this ever released? Because some of the comments seem to sound like the people who have it actually got copies on cartridge... how/when/where was this game released and how the hell can I get it? lol

Sorry to dredge up an old subject, I've rummaged all over the net and just really want to see if I can get me a copy. I ASSUME its on disc and that you just have to burn it, but I looked in the homebrew thread and couldn't see it anywhere, I also googled but couldn't find a site with an image. thanks guys

thanks buddy, I read a few pages on that thread and it sounds like some maybe found a better copy of the game on disc and is working on getting it 100% bug free... has anyone played lately at all? any version I mean, if so how well does it play/control, is there a save function at this point? cheers

Seems to be one of those topics they pick up, work on for a bit till they get sick of it, put it down, create a few games, then at some point they get the whim to pick up for a bit more refinement.

The general attitude I've received when I asked about this generally is along the lines of "There will be no wine before it's time". (If you remember those commericals from a bit ago.) :)

In other words, it will be ready when it's ready.

hmm... it does seem as thought some people have better versions than others though, right? So is there nowhere I can get a copy to burn of this at least in its current state?

You shouldnt burn it...thats wrong.
But you can buy a copy..not fixed from Good Deal Games or BC electronics still I think.
Its a awesome game. Same control found on SCD. Just alittle better looking.
I still have all my box / case / label / # pad art from 3-4 years ago ready for it if there is a release.
I really love this game. :D

From Neo and myself... no... not yet, anyway. Apparently Kizza has one, you could try asking him to prove it :)

Thank you, I love making boxes....sometimes I get carried away like with Soul Star. I have this condition where I cannot have a game (unrealesed/proto/homebrew.....hell even hardware,) without it having a real box and such for it.
So everytime I recieve a homeless game, I have too create something for it. Its fun..time consuming...stress releiver "sorta of", but I cant help it. I just have not found a way to produce them cheap or easy for mass release. I fear that I never will. I dont feel right to have to charge a arm and leg to make these. If a cheap fast process ever shows its head, Im there!.
My main problem most of the time is overdoing the construction process which is not helping the situation like my Enigma Machine book box.

I'm lost... As far as I am aware, neither GDG nor BC Electronics have any licencing agreement with the developers.

How is buying an unlicenced copy from a vendor any different than burning a download?

ok so bottom line is that you can only get this by downloading it, right? No guarantees it'll be a good copy either, right?

cool, I was actually going to mention Black Ice White Noise a moment ago but thought nah, so how did you get that? Did this person who was selling them just have roms? I'd be interested to see that game as the footage I saw on Youtube shows that it could've had great potential

BIWN is a bit of a strange thing. The game was cancelled well into the development phase, and there are several work-in-progress versions around, all of them more or less buggy and incomplete. One of these used to be downloadable for free under a fairly relaxed license (maybe Creative Commons, I don't remember exactly), then someone who apparently belonged to the original development team asked everyone to stop distributing it, and started selling copies on CD.

pretty interesting stuff, thanks mate! I actually saw a video of the game on youtube and someone actually posted a comment saying something along the lines of "I worked on this game and can't believe someone has footage of it" etc, maybe that person was the one who instigated the whole "please stop distributing it" situation

Soulstar was released awhile ago by some guy who sold a bunch of copies on ebay. He started with BIN's of about $50 then kept lowering the price until they no longer sold, then he bailed. The people selling copies now (B&C, Good Deal Games) are not affiliated with the individual who released the game. Considering the circumstances, I don't think redistribution of the game really hurts anybody. However, when you buy copies from online dealers you're really just paying for a common service: they downloaded the game off the internet and then burned it to a CD-R for you.

If you want to play soulstar right away, you can head over to Jaguar Sector. Go to downloads > Atari Jaguar Unreleased > Soulstar Encrypted.

Also, the currently available version is buggy (no question), but Gunstar did post a tutorial as to how to circumvent some of the bugs and play much of the game. I haven't played it very much so can't comment myself though... anyway, this was posted by Gunstar awhile back on JS2:

Quote

but might not have been able to get past the 4th phase/first level of the game, I have good news for you! You now have in your possession a MUCH more playable game. I've been playing this game a lot lately as part of rag project I'm working on, and I finally found a way to guarantee getting past this corrupted level 100% of the time (unless of course you get killed in the game, I just mean it won't crash on you anymore if you follow my instructions). I was going to save this "gem" for a revelation in an article I'm doing on the game, but I debating whether it would be ethical for me to publish an article on the game when it's not even an officially released product. (yet Posted Image)
So, in the spirit of JS2's aniversary and Jay's and other's generosity, I've decided to tell JS2 members now. The "trick" is that when you encounter the CPU in the mothership in the forth (and last) phase of level one of the game, that you stay as far away from it as possible (once you have engaged it in mortal combat), and as high in the air as possible (holding the "C" button and moving up and down allows you to change the ships height/elevation). When the CPU sends out it's "spinning ring" shoot missles (the "A" button changes weapons) at it to destroy it (See the SegaCD strategy guide for Soul Star on game strategy). The CPU does pull your ship toward it so you have to constantly pull back to remain at the maximum distance possible. If you manage to stay away from it and destroy it, the game will not crash at this point. Of course you still have to activate the gate(s) and fly through one as the mission briefing describes. But you will be able to continue the game. PLEASE note though, that if you choose the easy gate, you will see the FMV briefing for the next level, but it will crash right after that. If you choose the medium gate, you will procede to the next "water world" level, which comes first on medium, then it will crash after this level as the game attempts to load the same level it crashes on in the easy gate. But, if you choose the HARD gate, as far as I can tell, the game continues even further (I've made it to 3 aditional levels or through about 8-9 phases). I presume that once the point in the HARD difficulty gate/game that you will go to the level that crashes on Easy, it will crash then as well on HARD. But at least there is much more of a game for you to play now, and the levels are FRICKEN AWSOME!!!!!!! Posted Image
Occasionally the game may crash while playing it beyond the CPU phase, but it seems stable about 90% of the time (ignoring non-game effecting corrupted graphics on some levels). Enjoy SOUL STAR!!
