With the talk of the new GBA coming out, I visited IGN.COM to see what the best rated GBA games were. I hadn't noticed this before, but it looks like they've reviewed several hombrew Lynx games!

Champ Rally (6.0)
http://pocket.ign.co...5/165637p1.html

Remnant (3.0)
http://pocket.ign.co...5/165134p1.html

Lexis (5.0)
http://pocket.ign.co...3/163235p1.html

Ponx
http://pocket.ign.co...1/161996p1.html

The reviews are pretty old, but I never noticed them before...

I think there a few more Lynx reviews hidden somewhere on that site, most if not all of them were done by Robert Jung right? Here's his page with a whole mess of Jag and Lynx reviews, I find most of them spot on.

I'm grateful they gave the Songbird games any coverage -- Craig @IGN is a long-time Lynx fan, and a great guy. But they were a little harsh on some games IMO, with comments like "Champ Rally should support at least four players" (it does, but this was not announced at that time, but that's not the point -- how many GBC games EVER had support for four players?) or "Why publish this game now? They should have waited and added tons of new features." If that were the case, we'd likely never see new games published, as developers would get burned out after adding the 83rd new feature to their game, and fans would give up after several years had passed with no new games.

I know my games aren't perfect -- Ponx is fun but limited in variety, and I really should have found an artist but what did I know at the time.;) -- but I think my games are first of all fun, and second of all hold up very well against the GBC, which was itself the follow-on to the actual Lynx competitor, the GB. Even though I own a GBA, I still find myself playing Warbirds or Crystal Mines II or Champ Rally again and again. The games are simple but addictive, and have great graphics and audio.

Hello Carl,

have you ever asked them to alter their CR-rating? I mean, the worst they found negative in CR was the ComLynx-story.
Their review might influence possible buyers to stay away from CR.

The reviewer also had some minor issues with joypad control (sliding around corners and such) and a perceived lack of track variety. I would not want to go back and bicker about the reviews at this point, and frankly I doubt many diehard Lynx fans start by looking at their site. Besides, they gave Remnant an even worse score. ;)

Lucien really did a fantastic job on Champ Rally, and I honestly believe this game is on par with its competitor of that time, the GBC. It's got graphics, tons of options, seven different tracks, powerups, game modes, and more.

Actually I didn't ask him to change the rating but after complaining about inaccurate information they raised the rating silently.

Sure I'm glad they reviewed a lynx game.

The reviewer has been gone long time as it seems (right after this review).

I forgot, atarihq.com did also review the game. Their review was much more favorable and more complete in my opinion (I think they gave it a 7).

I now own a GBA and it must be said that the vast majority of the software beyond the obvious aces (MarioKart, Advance Wars, etc) isn't worth the silicon it's burned onto. So most GBA games deserve a savaging review. The fact that titles such as CR have average reviews therefore isn't so bad I guess.

...plus Atarihq.com seems to have the most consistent and reliable reviews as far as I'm concerned.

I think Gregory D. Georges and his Ataritimes has also good reviews on Songbird games and a lot of other Lynx games. Great thing it is that you can give your own scores here also. http://www.ataritime...iews/index.html

When are you guys, Carl and Lucien, going to reveal some cheats, tips and trix on this game? :)

I have to agree with Carl's comments. I thought that Lexis, in particular, was reviewed rather poorly at IGN. I suppose that it's either one of those games that you either love or hate, but I can say that I've played it nonstop since it arrived in the mail. :)

Also note that some statements made in Champ.Rally aren't right and several things are missing like the increasing damage factor in tournament mode and it doesn't even mention the ghost car mode. Neither is mentioned any of the pick up items or shortcuts.

But on the other hand it's nice that they did review the game (as it isn't one for the popular gameboys).
