My PS3 can play PSOne discs and my Wii can play GameCube disks. The local retro game store has both the original PSOne Metal Gear Solid game as well as the GameCube remake called Twin Snakes, Which do I get?

I have slight fondness for the original because that's what I played a bit of back in the day on my friend's PSOne but Twin Snakes for GameCube has wide screen support for my high def TV, better graphics and apparently more moves (like you can peek around corners).

Seems like Twin Snakes is the better one to go for, am I right? Or is there something they messed up in converting the game to GameCube and would I be better off getting the original?

If you have a PS2 and don't already have 2 and 3 I'd highly recommend you skip both and get the Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection. It includes the original(on PS1 discs) and 2 and 3. It also comes in a nifty boxed set that looks awesome on your shelf. I'm not sure what the normal cost is but I bought mine from my local retro store for $20.

I prefer the original, personally. They re-performed the dialogue in Twin Snakes and I think it lost something. Plus, the added game-play elements (like hanging off ledges) just seemed tacked on since they were completely unneeded in the original. It's been years since I tried Twin Snakes so my memory could be a bit fuzzy, but other than looking nice it didn't really do much for me. I don't know, I guess I'm kind of a purist in that I would rather play a game designer's original vision of a game rather than later remakes.

I agree with A_Locomotive, I'm pretty sure that you can get the boxed set of the three Metal Gears brand new for $20 at Walmart even. If thats not an option, I too have a fondness for the original, and if you get that you will know what exactly your getting since you've already played it some, so you really can't go wrong with that choice. Either way though, its not an uncommon game, and whatever one you do purchase the other will always be able to be found easily if so desired.

I enjoyed the GC version a lot, but the PSone version has to be my favorite version of the two.

I would get the original one first so you can appreciate it first like so many have before. The Gamecube version though has great cut scenes, in a surreal stylized sense. I didn't mind the dialog though, thankfully Liquid's voice actor is the same, but obviously would prefer the original to it. Gamecube version doesn't have VR missions but has a boss battle mode. In the original I couldn't see a resemblance between Solid and Liquid, except in the briefing tapes, however in the Gamecube version there obviously is AND you get to see his tattoo better. As I said before, the cut scenes are great in the Gamecube version. The ones with Liquid Snake and Cyborg Ninja are probably my favorite action scenes of any video game and I think impacted the story and experience better than the original.

I have owned several Metal Gear games, but the only one I ever completed was the first NES one.

That said, I did have MGS for the PS1 "back in the day" and enjoyed it. It seemed so much like a movie at the time.

Get the PSX version, and play it on a Dreamcast. Same game, just graphically enhanced.

Oops, the HD-Collection doesn't contain Metal Gear Solid...
