The whole trademark lawsuit against "Scrolls" is more than stupid: it's a harmful precedent against game developers big and small. No one company should own a word.

I'm not supporting this kind of behavior and have no plans to purchase another Bethesda game until they come to their senses. Any like-minded gamers out there?

I'm not going to boycott what looks like a great sequel just because a corporate lawyer just out of law school was perhaps too overzealous in doing their job. If you're going to go that far, you might as well curl up and die or move to a remote place in the wilderness somewhere if you can't stand a corporate lawyer taking things too far, since Bethesda sure as heck doesn't hold a monopoly on that problem.

Instead of doing something loony, why not send out a strongly worded letter expressing your opinion on the matter (Which stands a better chance of being looked at and taken seriously than a email), and just buy it used if you feel that strongly and not buy any DLC?

Then, your stance actually has the chance of having some small effect (They're not going to miss your $59.99 like you think they are, and they're never going to see your protest at AtariAge), they won't make a dime from you, and you still get to enjoy the game.

Add me to the list of people who won't boycott the game over that. They can have the name Scrolls as far as I'm concerned. I don't really use it much anyways.

Already pre-ordered it. It's stupid that they're being so protective over the word "scrolls", but I honestly don't care. When I was a kid, I remember seeing a story on the news about Sony forcing a restaurant to change it's name because it was called "Sonie's". Maybe you should stop buying Sony products, too.

Game companies own lots of words. Try creating a game with the word "Mario" or "sonic" in the title and see how that goes for you.

I don't like the lawsuit but I will not boycott. I can't. Oblivion gave me over 5 years of some of the best gaming ever made and Morrowind provided even more. Skyrim is going to be amazing and, as with its predecessors, one of the best values in gaming. The truth is there are other game companies that aren't getting my money right now simply because I know I am not going to have time for their games with the amount of Skyrim I am going to be playing. I hope the lawsuit fails but long live The Elder Scrolls.

More recently I remember reading Nintendo forced a dentist in Sweden to change its clinic's name from "Wii" to something else.http://kotaku.com/52...-to-change-name :?

Anyway, regarding the "Scrolls" thing, I didn't like the lawsuit either but I will be buying Skyrim (with or without scrolls :P ) on day 1!

This isnt really a big deal for me but it is pretty lame. They probably won't win it but this is hardly a case to boycott Bethesda. They were very helpful when I got screwed over by the bonus pre-order codes for The Hunted and they think for themselves and not what the industry is doing. I've always liked them.

Skyrim in 9 short days!

Don't think disinterest qualifies as a boycott.
Or am I boycotting mushrooms?

Boycott = Voting with one's dollars over issues they believe in, regardless of what others may think.

Just because you don't give a shit about the issue it doesn't mean the people who do are just throwing a tantrum.

Personally I don't give a shit about Bethesda to begin with so there's no active boycott in my case, just another reason to smirk at them as I go play something else. Haven't been waiting for Skyrim and only got a few of the earlier games in their elder scrolls series because they were cheap secondhand.

So if the lawyers get their way I guess I'll have to think of a different name for my game: Legend of Gear Theft Evil Speed Fantasy Duty with Honor.

That's the theory, but you should consider how (and if) it appears to the company you're boycotting. The dollars lost to most boycotts are as nebulous as the dollars lost to piracy.

On the list of big gaming companies doing something to piss me off this is very low on the list.

Mord pretty much sums up whatever I might have said. Skyrim continues the trend of letting RPGs fester into first person shooters. Wouldn't buy it anyway.

I guess caring about trademarks and piracy requires a developer mentality. Not that I rock as a developer - far from it. Just, when you create as opposed to consume losing your rights gets more personal. Imagine making the next big beat-em up and having Capcom sue you because you used the word "Fighter".

Totally besides the point. You are responsible for your own "voting". If enough people feel and do the same, change can happen. Voicing your opinion can help attract attention to it and perhaps add more "votes". Even if the majority is too apathetic towards the issue to care, at least you'll have your money to spend elsewhere - perhaps to buy some popcorn to watch the majority bitch when it comes back to bite them. :)

To sum up: Don't let popular opinion dictate your own.

I'm semi-boycotting, but only because I've never really liked any of the games that Bethesda has developed.

...games that they have published, however...that's a different story entirely.
