Just pipping DK to the win it's... Dig Dug

A game I never played much apart from on the PC way back when [2nd thoughts maybe that was digger?!] ... there are two versions so we'll give them both a play and see how they fair. To save confusion ( ) we'll refer to the games as "Dig Dug Narrow" and "Dig Dug Wide". Mr.Dig has joined the party too.

"Dig Dug - Wide"
Atari 1982 released ver (not the prototype)
[Wide playfield, Title screen should match this: ]

Scoring Standard HSC pts
Bonus point Highest score screen 1 in 1 man (top three players, highest 2pts)
Bonus point Highest score at end of level 2 in 1 man (top three players, highest 2pts)

"Dig Dug - Narrow"
Atari 1983 ver (Datasoft and US gold releases also ok)
[Graphics 1 style title screen & narrow playfield]

Fandal XEX (has it listed as Dig Dug 5200 - it was the same as the Atari 5200 release)

Scoring Standard HSC pts

Difficulty - Start on any level (Baby / level 0 is ok!) as the game levels up every 10 screens (screen number shown on playfield graphics )
Scoring 4pts 1st, 3pts 2nd&3rd, 2pts 4th&5th, 1pt 6th+

2 Bonus points for anyone winning all 3 games

In fact, didnt the 5200 version get an official release?

5200 cart is the later version, I believe.

I'm getting all kind of glitches on Dig Dug WIDE with lots of garbage on the top of the screen.

anyone got a better ATR?

Played both, initial thoughts were that Mr Do has nothing to worry about but still kinda fun... Going to make tha A8 Wide version the main game and as the gameplay is so similar, the 5200 Narrow version a bonus game along with Mr.Dig from Microdeal (thanks orph for reminding me of that one ) .

I think the Wide Dig Dug is best, more in your face and I like the tune. Think both games may be better on NTSC than PAL as a seems a tad slow. I had about a dozen goes in the end so it ticks the one more go box.

Next season we must play ESC's Diamonds (which is a superb game and extremely intense; Brian the Blob still gives me nightmares ). The sequel Dan Strikes Back is also a superb game... think I've still got enough ideas for another season or two

Just played Dig Dug wide, it's terrible compared to Dig Dug narrow. Surely most peoples carts will be Dig Dug narrow?

Ok I've had a proper go on Mr.Dig too... after an hour on the DigDugs playing this game is like a rocket!!! Here's what we'll do. Start on Baby (level 0) 100K max per level, so end your go then go onto the next one. Players can continue from the level they reached. (I'll updated post 1)

Played both Dig Dugs again, still like wide better but will make narrow full points if we get enough players for it too

DigDigDigDugDugDug I Found a Bug!

playing "wide" the last baddie was escaping, I was firing along the top expecting to kill him and he seemed to leave but the game kept making the warning noise and I could carry on with the empty screen!

Also I noticed that when you move left into the leftmost column, it thinks you are tunnelling and gives you the 10pts everytime! [no using this ]

Now, not that I want any of you to disappear but if you do want some extra gaming here are a couple of things you may like:
1 The Mighty Jill Off - play the beta, am sure Creature XL would appreciate some feedback. This excellent new game was narrowly pipped from winning this years abbuc software contest. (XL/XE only). Anyone playing/posting feedback will get 1HSC point bonus. Anyone completing the game (it's tough!) will earn 3pts (not me).
2 Zylon is runnig Millipede in the Atari 5200 HSC. Our version is allowed so if you play make sure you use the 1984 version, not the 1983 proto! If you have a 5200 also am sure those guys would like to see you play too, same for the 7800 and 2600 HSCs.

I'm playing xex ver, only happened once so not a problem (so far!) - OK, if anyone beats that score on either version they'll earn a bonus point

Looks like this is going to be a tough contest to earn the HSC wins (not looking like me at the moment, still there's 2 weeks left to play and I'm working on my tunnelling strategy )

p.s. Diz do you remember playing Digger back at Rockwell?!

Hahaha what a time! )) - soory Seagal on TV For me this game is good work! Difficulity is on appropriate level with one hard moment - block spikes. How little need for a good game - scroll and nice idea
