I am looking for a good simple NES emulator prefer one which has an exe file.
I have zero problem getting Stella to run on my system but EVERY other emulator I have tried is nothing but a pain in the ass.
If anyone can point me to a good easy to install/use NES emu and some ROM's I would appreciate.

Try Mednafen. It's one of my favorite emulators ever. It emulates most 8-bit consoles, and SNES and Genesis support is forthcoming. The NES support is based on FCEU. It should be in the repository.

Edit: What do you mean "exe file"? We don't use those on Linux.

That's because most emulators on Linux were developed for Linux as an afterthought (where the main focus was on Windows). Stella is actually one of the very few emulators that is developed exclusively on Linux, and ported to OSX and Windows afterwards. IMHO, a Linux system with a properly supported OpenGL card is still the best environment for Stella.

Thanks Stephen! Stella is the top of the line. I found an NES emulator I was about to download and it had no sound whatsoever and I couldn't figure out how to make my gamepad work with it. Screw it, I'll play Atari

Sound on Linux has always been a pain because there's more than one way to do it. You should try Mednafen. It uses SDL for audio just like Stella, so it ought to work if Stella works. Same goes for joystick support, but you do have to hit "ALT + SHIFT + 1" to assign buttons. You only have to do that once though.

Right, I forgot about sound; that can be a mess. I disable all sound servers and remove pulseaudio completely, and just use ALSA. That works for everything I've thrown at it (emulators, Flash, games, videos, etc).

you can compile the latest version of FCEUX from the SVN. I think it has the best NES sound quality.

Also Nestopia can be compiled in Ubuntu.
