I voted for Castlevania, but honestly it's a little annoying. I bought it for the retro games, but they're locked from the start and there's this awful 3d 'thing' that you have to play to unlock stuff. ...Which I still haven't managed to do.

I've played all but two of the games on your list (haven't done mega man title or ghosts and goblins), and from what I've played, Castlevania is the one that I have the most nice things to say about. I've listed all my positives above. May want to consider the playstation1 versions from the PSN store. (unless the psp version does something actually cool like playable SOTN maria from the saturn version)

I enjoyed all of the games in the poll except for N+, which only held my attention for about 15 minutes because of an overwhelming "been there done that" reaction (and not in a good way).

Basically all of them.

I'd personally go with Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins, Castlevania, or Mega Man X first though. Unless you want something pretty abstract and creative, then go for Loco Roco.

Regarding the Castlevania game, is it already in the GBA/DS rpg-ish style, or still oldschool forward-ever-backward-never levels?

It's Castlevania: Dracula X - Rhondo of Blood remade with 2.5d visuals. It's an old-school CV game.

When you complete it, you unlock the original PC Engine DUO version, as well as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night from the PlayStation (the one that pushed the series in the GBA/DS gameplay style).

Thanks for that info regarding Castlevania! Meanwhile I managed watching the gametrailers review and I think I'll go with it next :)

Since I still haven't seen Castlevania in the wild, neither new nor used, I've been reading some more about the other games. Apparently the Prinny games are download-only in Europe, so I kicked them from the list.

Also, while trying to fill my MemStick in order to to bring it under 2GB, I realized that there's demos for Patapon and the Locoroco games, so I'll see if I like them in the coming days :)

Or you could keep them on the list as imports.

Ah well... I mainly intend to use the PSP as a device to get me loads of high quality 10.- games ;)

I just ordered a copy of Castlevania, thanks to everyone for their help so far! :)

Meanwhile I tried the Patapon demo, which apparently isn't a platformer at all, so I'm kinda puzzled why it got sorted into that category on gameFAQs...

I loved the Locoroco games. Their nice long games, you can dump quiet a few dozens of hours into it, but each level is in the 5-20 minute range, a great pick up quick play game, or for sitting for hours if you wanted too. From so many games that are redone or just continuing an old series, this one is totally new and it was a real blast to boot.

The others I haven't played, mostly cause I didn't know the existed, but I saw N+ and didn't get enough info from the box to see if it was worth picking up. Patapon is a "beat" game. It's platformy only in the sense of it's 2D platformish look. But it's basically a "simon says" game, hit the keys to the beat like Guitar Hero or whatever.
