About a year ago, I created this thread:

http://www.atariage....ost__p__2088325

I despised the system. I just thought it was pretty awful. The original thread is worth a read if you're on the fence. Well, my opinion has actually changed, partially through the impassioned defense put up by folks in this forum. I actually tried a few of the suggested games.

The main thing that broke it for me was finding about 35 games and a Intellivision 2 with an Intellivoice at an estate sale for 30 dollars. While the games and console were dusty and musty, a bit of elbow grease cleaned them up. The games were a great find because they all came with their manuals and overlays. They also included two vintage plastic storage boxes to hold them all. The home it came from also had a Colecovision and 9 games that I also bought. Apparently there was a Fairchild Channel F there at one time (I found a game instructions mixed with other stuff), but perhaps someone got it before I got there. This home had a lot of 70's & 80's techy stuff in it. They spent a lot of money on kid's electronics based on the quantity of inty games.

I sold the Inty 2 here on Atariage because I have an original unit, but I kept all of the non duplicate games and have begun playing them. I rather like Burger-time (which is fun on any system) and of course AD&D, which I owned before the auction. Other games have grown on me, such as Imagic's Beauty and Beast (the manual is a hoot, and the gameplay is fun), Microsurgeon and, sadly enough, Horse Racing. Demon Attack really doesn't compare well to the 2600 version in my mind, but having Earth in the background it sorta cool.

So, I don't mind playing the Intellivision so much now. The controller still sorta sucks and it's still not on my list of top systems, but I don't despise it any more. I guess having some decent games does help a lot. Too bad the estate sale mostly had common mediocre titles.

Anyone have any comments on the games I scored or on my change of heart?

Thats great that you changed your mind, I almost didnt get my INTV, im so glad that I did, I bought it with a ColecoVision with the thought that I would play my CV all the time and when I got bored I would fire up my INTV

I was so wrong, my CV gets played like one a week (if that) and my INTV gets played daily

I love it, I also got lucky and Boxpressed hooked me up with a ton of games and I won a huge lot of great games off Ebay

Let me try and give you my thoughts on some of the games you and I both own

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: This game is not my cup of tea, however I can see how amazing it is for an Adventure type game

Armor Battle: Its a little hard to get the controlls down, but once I did this game offers so much more then 2600 Combat

Astrosmash: Great game, so much fun as a fast paced shooter, to me its Space Invaders and Demon Attack rolled into one

Auto Racing: I still have trouble with the controls, I have read that once you get them down the game is fun

B-17 Bomber: By far the best Intellivoice game, so much depth and replay value, just a great overall game, I have always wanted a game like 1942 with more depth

Backgammon: Dont own it

Beauty & the Beast: A great game thats like Donkey Kong, when I want a quick fun game I always reach for Beauty and the Beast

Bomb Squad: The second best Intellivoice game, the games take a long time and lack action, but sometimes when im in that mood for a long thinking game Bomb Squad works everytime

Bowling: The best Bowling game ever, I love this game, its perfect, in my top 5 for sure

Boxing: I dont like it, I have tried and tried and gave it a fair chance

Burgertime: I dont own the CV version (which I heard is good), but for me this is the best port by far of Burgertime, im sure it helps that I have always loved the arcade version and the 7-11 by my house had Burgertime for years in the 80s. I play BT alot

Centipede: A very playable port for sure

Checkers: I own it but only played it to make sure it worked, its checkers so for that I have no complaints

Demon Attack: I like this version better then the 2600 version, for some reason I have had problems where I seem to get stuck and have to let up on the disc and push down again to get moving again, its weird because my controllers dont do that in other games

Donkey Kong: Ok this is a horrible port, however, I have played it alot trying to break 100k (which I have done many times) and I actually started to enjoy playing it! In fact the last time I played I had a great time scoring like 60k on my last life

Horse Racing: Played it once and took me forever to get the race started (yes I read the instructions) I wish you had more control of the horse

Las Vegas Poker & Blackjack: Played it once to made sure it woked, very easy to play and straight forward, its just not my kind of game, if I want to play cards I will play for real

Lock 'n' Chase: Have only played a couple times and just didnt get into it

Major League Baseball: I own the later INTV version so I can play the computer, and its awesome, great old school sports game

Math Fun: Dont own it

Microsurgeon: At first I was blown away and loved it! But it gets boring fast

NASL Soccer: Not bad, I just wish the players moved faster

NBA Basketball: Just like Baseball I own the INTV release and its awesome! So much depth, so much fun, I love hitting the outside set shot!

NFL Football: Again I own the later INTV release as well as the original, I like Baseball and Basketball better because they are easier to pick up and play, plus im such a huge Tecmo Bowl fan and play that all the time still so its not fair to this game, but for what it is I think its good

NHL Hockey: I dont like Hockey in real life and I dont like Hockey on the INTV

Night Stalker: I like this game, its like Berzerk to me, its just to slow, if the game play was faster I would like it alot more

PGA Golf: I dont like Golf, so I have only played this once to make sure it worked, so I dont have an opinion on it

Reversi: My mom and her friends played Othello all the time, I never got into it, so I played this once to make sure it works, like checkers the game works like the real thing, its just not something that I want to play

Sea Battle: I love it! Awesome game, these are the kind of in depth games I would have loved to played back in the day had I owned an INTV back in the day

Snafu: My favorite 2 player INTV game, my wifes favorite game on the INTV, she loves playing me and we have fun trapping each other and talking smack (loving smack, not the kind of smack my friends and I use lol)

Space Armada: I dont know about this game, I love Space Invaders on the 2600, playing this game just feels akward, I dont know how to explain it

Space Battle: Im not feeling it, this game is pretty boring to me, its not bad, its just not something I like

Space Hawk: I dont like this game, I hve played it at least 10 times and everytime I play it I just dont like it

Space Spartans: Just like Space Battle, the Intellivoice is cool, but this game is just plain to me

Tron Deadly Discs: Yes! My favorite game by far on the INTV, I have scored over 2 million and love every second of this game, taking out the Recognizer is the best. Amazing game, remember to play with two controllers, using the first controller to move and the second one to fire, it gives the game a Robotron like feeling.

Tron Maze-A-Tron: This game pisses me off so bad, I like it! I have no idea how or why I like it but I do, its a hard and confusing game, I think am just hell bent on understanding this game, this is my challange game

U.S. Ski Team Skiing: Great game, so much fun, like Beauty and the Beast when I want a fun quick game I reach for this one. I love it

Vectron: I have read the instructions, tried very hard to get into this game and I just cant, games like this that have a bad rep I always try to look beyond that and play the game and give it an honest chance, but this game is just too weird, I still want to keep trying on this one and I will, but for now its just to weird

Word Fun: I dont own it

Thanks for the input. I'll be honest that I have yet to put a lot of time into some of the games. I was impressed by some of the sports games. They were a lot more complex than I anticipated.

I don't care for the intellivision Centipede. I feel like it's poor port compared to some other versions. The movement of the centipede is a bit off putting and just distracts me from the game. The 7800 version si the oen I normally play.

I had trouble playing Tron Deadly Discs. I think I don't have the manual for it. If it uses two controllers, that might be my problem right there. I'll have to find a manual for it.

Intellivision has taken a whole new place in my heart in the last year, many due to the continued support of it's fans. The version of Moon Patrol made for it is simply amazing.

In truth, to me the Intellivision was the technical wonder of it's day. I see it much like the Jaguar to the SNES/Genesis. It was technically superior but the SNES and Genesis was more popular. That was the Intellivision to the Atari 2600.

By technical stats the Intellivision was sure winner. I saw one at my friend's house and was amazed that a game system could make such graphics.

But the Atari 2600 was cheaper and easier to attain, and when your parents are paying, you have to go with what they are willing to buy, which is generally whatever they can buy the cheapest.

But I am collecting, slowly, for the Intellivision now, but I have always liked it.

Thoughts on these games...

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons -I think there are 2 or 3 in the series... very cool, never get far. Need a hacked version with unlimited arrows. Then it will be a fancy fancy version of VENTURE. :P
Armor Battle - This was the game that amazed me in 1980. Compare this to combat on the Atari 2600 and it is just amazing.
Astrosmash - Fun fun game. Played this for hours.
Auto Racing - (Never played.)
B-17 Bomber - "B-17 Bawhmer!!" Heheh... LOVE THIS GAME. And I have sought out real B-17 bombers to look at since.
Backgammon - (Never played.)
Beauty & the Beast - (Never played.)
Bomb Squad - (Never played.)
Bowling - (Never played.)
Boxing - (Never played.)
Burgertime - A great arcade classic!
Centipede - Played this once I got my CC3, and thought it was quite good.
Checkers - (Never played.)
Demon Attack - Interesting how it has the mother ship level. Really enjoyed this.
Donkey Kong - Eh, not bad, can't wait to see the new fan version though.
Horse Racing - (Never played.)
Las Vegas Poker & Blackjack - (Never played.)
Lock 'n' Chase - (Never played.)
Major League Baseball - (Never played.)
Math Fun - (Never played.)
Microsurgeon - (Never played.)
NASL Soccer - (Never played.)
NBA Basketball - (Never played.)
NFL Football - (Never played.)
NHL Hockey - (Never played.)
Night Stalker -This was the game that really got me hooked on Intellivision. And I have played this for hours into incredibly hard odds. Wow this game is fun.
PGA Golf - (Never played.)
Reversi - (Never played.)
Sea Battle - (Never played.)
Snafu - (Never played.)
Space Armada - "Space Invaders"? I liked this enough.
Space Battle - Meh...
Space Hawk - Nice if I could just get manuvering down on it. Otherwise great concept.
Space Spartans - "Star Raiders" without and real control when you get to the area of space where the enemies are. Meh!
Tron Deadly Discs - This I have played for days straight. (pausing and all). There are few cooler games to me than this one. And in the end the graphics were so simple. Some running people throwing blocks at each other. But it's fun!
Tron Maze-A-Tron - Meh! (And I have TRIED to like it. I'm a huge Tron fan.)
U.S. Ski Team Skiing - (Never played.)
Vectron [White Label] - (Never played.)
Word Fun - (Never played.)

I actually enjoyed Mission X believe it or not. Kinda like 1942, Raiden, and games like that.

I'm just getting back into it. Had one 30-ish years ago. I hope it works. Cuttlecart sounds great.

Now, we just seriously need a source a maker/creator/seller/installer for composite A/V mods. They are absolutely, positively non-existent.

I hope the one i have in the mail works, and I hope it is characteristic of INTV to be reliable and clear RF! Then things may not be so bad, with the RF, eh?

Like I said before as long as you have a coax adapter you will be fine, the picture comes in perfect

There is no need for an AV mod on any old system in my opinion

I even have my INTV hooked up through my NES RF box and it still has perfect picture quality, so does my ColecoVision and Atari 2600

Let me find a screen shot

Glad you gave it a chance. It really is a good system, it's admittedly tough to get past the terrible controllers. But there are some great games.

I have found that the Intellivision looks pretty good on my crt. No composite needed.

I can't say that the system is on the top of my list of systems, but I don't despise it any more. I mean, my hatred for the system was pretty intense. It's grown on me.
