And all that was totally on-topic, and not "small minded" at all. You don't get it, that's fine. Totally validates off-topic random sporadic rants.

Did you actually read the OP's post? Or am I mistaken in thinking that was directed at me (as you didn't mention anybody  )

If my rant wasn't relevant, sorry about that, but in relation to the OP, I think it was.

The main point of the OP was the video game tie in. Evidenced by the thread title. You always take any excuse to rant about Apple though. It's sort of like a reading comprehension issue. <edit, nevermind, I'm solving the problem.>

Just think how much video games would cost if Steve Jobs actually was the most influential person in gaming. :o

Perhaps he got the vote optimisticly and based on his potential legacy, such as when our President won the Nobel early in his term.

He made ONE game that was based on Pong. He in no way qualifies to be the most influential, agree with you, DracIsBack.

I like Apple stuff, as well, but most influential in gaming? Nope.

Dying gave him a HUGE boost in rep points!
Yeah, funny thing is his own idiocy is what killed him. He had a rare variant SLOW pancreatic cancer and turned down conventional treatment for alternative medicine.

I wish I could say that he did more to discredit voodoo medicine than influence video games but while he did little in the latter category the former did not happen at all. It's just: "what an ideal American Visionary!"

Yeah not to beat up on Steve Jobs or anything.. after all he has made an impact on the industry. Just not the video gaming industry.

That being said.. My comment was just sarcasm in general that people all of a sudden become legend after dying. :D

We tend to omit someone's personality defects from their legacy after they die too.

I'd give him some "street cred" for his work back in the day at Atari on breakout, but I would never call him the most influential person on video games...that's a stretch - no matter how you look at it.

What work? That was all Woz, Jobs just helped with the wire wrap. And even then the game was already created.

He's been somewhat influential to gaming. His name is associated with a brand that a lot of people gamed on in their schools whenever their teachers didn't feel like educating them (rumor has it some households even bought apples and macs). And really the iPhone is the drive behind the current mobile gaming craze. Sure there were smartphones before, but they were for boring businessmen--now I'm the only person I know without one.

A lot of names come to my head before him, but I can see how he could influence the 'takes internet surveys' crowd. Miyamoto or Yokoi would probably get my vote.

From what I heard, he tried "conventional" methods the first time, and then the cancer returned.

...but I'm not going to pretend I know the whole story. All I know is if one of the richest people in the world can't find a way to beat it, then dang...

IIRC, Steve Jobs bid for the redesign job of the breakout arcade board and was awarded the project by Atari. He then brought it to Woz for actual redesign and fulfillment. How is that not to be considered "working" on a project??? I never said that he was the inventor nor designer of breakout. I simply said that he gets some "street cred" for his work on breakout. Did I miss something? :?

Again, I would never call him the most influential person on video games...that's a stretch - no matter how you look at it.

This sounds like a case of your average poll-taker not knowing any of the other names on the list...

Oh man, that's just SILLY! I dunno, I don't particularly like or dislike him... But, MOST inflential? Really??!?
I mean I'd say Bushnell, or Miyamoto first off.
Heck, Jay Miner even. YES, he didn't write any games (that I know of), but as Father of the Amiga, with it's massive amount of games, he deserves that FAR more than Jobs.....
Or R.J Mical, who co-designed the Lynx?

I can think of MANY people more influential....
