PETA does crap like this because it gets them attention, not because they're serious about Mario dressing as a raccoon. Hence why I tend to ignore them entirely and enjoy my hamburgers.

So Joystiq discussed this silly PETA thingas well, they have some good points.

I have a question which is slightly unrelated. In the Joystiq article, they mention some Mario lore....

As everyone knows from reading the Nintendo Comics System (specifically the "Tanooki Suits Me" story from the Super Mario Bros. line) the Tanooki suit was hand-crafted by a tailor named Tanooki rather than any animal the material was lifted from

.... what I'd like to know is where can I read these Nintendo Comic Systems? There's a little bit of Donkey Kong lore I want to research and I am thinking it might be from the same source.

So, according to Kotaku, PETA is now claiming it was all a joke and for Mario fans to chill out.

What I'm curious about is why have we not heard anything from Nintendo about this? They certainly love forcing dental offices to change their nameor suing Nykoor (possibly, I can't prove this) pressuring The Angry Video Game Nerd to not call himself The Angry Nintendo Nerd all in the name of copyright infringement.

Possibly because it's easier to pick on the little guy. That's my guess.
