The original Xbox turns 10 today. Like them or hate them, MS changed gaming in so many good ways and I hope we see them around for at least 10 more.

Halo also turns 10. Every once in a great while does a game come around that won't be forgotten and Halo has left it's mark. Gonna go fire up the Anniversary Edition now, can't wait to spend some time again with my favorite game of all time.

If there was one multiplayer game that all my friends could agree on, it would be Halo (1, 2, 3, Reach, etc.). Part of the fun, I think, is that you aren't necessarily being forced to fight each other. It was like simulated action figures, almost.

OLD SCENARIO FROM YEARS AGO (trying to remember the map name, but it had a drive-thru sort of building):
Player 1: "Welcome to McDonalds, what would you like to order?"
Player 2: "Yes, I'd like to order a cheeseburger-"
Player 1: (fires rocket launcher at Player 1) "KABOOM!!!"

"Player 2 killed you"

Oh, we were so juvenile :P .

I got the Anniversary Edition in today as well.
I had forgotten I had pre-ordered it months ago! Haven't had a chance to fire it up yet. I don't think I ever finished the original game, so I am looking forward to this for sure!

I was hovering on the order button with release day delivery and I decided not to do it because of Skyrim. I will get it but it will probably be a bit cheaper. I still play Halo on my original Xbox frequently and I think the magnitude of its affect on console gaming cannot be downplayed. It didn't do anything revolutionary. Neither did the Xbox as the Dreamcast had introduced much of what set the Xbox apart from PS2 and GC. But what the Xbox and Halo did, they did well. The Xbox is the console known for introducing online play to the console market because it did it better than any before it and it did it in a way that made sense for hardcore gamers and casual gamers alike. They also put impressive hardware in their box and provided a development platform that was familiar to PC developers allowing them to build their games for PC and Xbox simultaneously with minimal divergence in their codebase. I think these were crucial aspects of the console and their advancement with the 360 is what has made MS's venture a success. Hopefully they don't blow it by overdoing Kinect but so far so good. I'm looking forward to another ten years with Xbox.

I've actually been contemplating picking up a used xbox. How reliable are these machines - hard drive, cd drive, etc - 10 years later?

I hear the Xboxes with Samsung drives are the ones to get for best reliability. I have two Xboxes with Thompson drives. One is dead and the other is still kicking it. Check here-> http://www.llamma.co..._comparison.htm to determine which drive the unit has (you have to open the DVD tray).

I'm fairly new to the Xbox and I've never played Halo. I checked out the demo for the Mac but didn't play for more than a couple minutes. I should probably pick it up for the Xbox. I only have like five games for it but I feel like I'm playing on borrowed time every time I fire it up. I'd be really surprised if it lasts another ten years! Ten months maybe...

Perfect thanks. I'll make sure to check the DVD tray before buying. Thanks for the link, very helpful :)

Yes, it was a very memorable experience for me. It was my first multi-system link-up playing experience. Not only did I have fun, I learned alot about networking.

I got Halo Annv yesterday. Had to buy two copies. My son and I played 10 years ago (he was 6 years old then) and still do today. Of course, he is is 16 years old now and consistently hands me my arse on a platter when we play... but that is too be expected. We played co-op last night... what a treat. Father-son play is a real treat for me.

Are the classic maps in there? I haven't D/L all the goodies yet. In my cursory look at the multiplayer, I didn't see any map names I recognized. I hope Blood gulch, a Long Walk Down a Short Hallway are in there. Oh, and sidewinder.... man that was a great cross field sniping level.

I got an Xbox earlier this year when the games were going cheap and accumulated about 60 of 'em. With that, I've now got every major entry in the last 3 generations of home consoles. ;)

Halo Anniversary? You wimps. Take it like a man and drop your day one Halo CE from ten years ago in instead :P

I got it too, and it's pretty good, unfortunately, most the people I know want to play the Reach maps rather than the original game :(

Yeah, I know that.

I'm disapointed that they didn't include all the maps redone or not). That's too bad :-(

I know that. My favorite all time map was Rat Race. Yeah, 16 playered with rockets. It was just one constant atomic cloud that level was. If it wasn't for that I would have never even tried multiplayered (non coop) stuff.

I was interested-ish but by the time I finally got into that generation, it was dead in the water and I got a PS2 instead. Was tempted about 3 years ago when I saw some new ones going for about £40 at the local ASDA in Cardiff. Must have found them lying in one of their warehouses.
