I picked Saints Row the 3rd up in an onlive deal, and have mixed feelings about this one. I suppose that's actually a positive since I tend to have far more negative feelings about gta-clone-sandbox games. Anybody else playing this one?

I guess my favorite part of the game is the customization. Cars can be stolen, brought home and customized in a garage--supplies of garaged cars are endless, and that's pretty awesome. Character customization is also high on my list. It's a robust system that actually let me input a fairly close representation of my own self-image into the game. A 250lb bearded man in a pink pirate costume. Much better than the slimeball-du-jour most sandbox games go for. They even use my character model in cutscenes.

Then there seems to be a turf and real estate money generation system in place. It speaks to my greedy side. Tons of character and gang upgrades to unlock too, giving me incentive to keep playing. Yes, there is a 'pager' that gives missions, but thankfully it's in the style of red faction: guerrilla, meaning they tell you once, they're totally optional and there is never guilt for not helping out. I haven't done one yet, I should try.

Car handling is usable--though naturally they don't feel like cars. It's really the GPS that shines though, as it places arrow indicators across turns going the wrong way creating the feeling of a closed race course. They're not solid walls in that they can be driven through, but if burnout paradise had used this, I might have played it for more than a couple hours.

On the down side, the world is just a bit bland. Everywhere looks about the same. And speaking of looks, there is a fair amount of pop-in on not-so-distant objects. Main missions are pretty interesting, but I'd still rather not do them, and the side missions are all predictable sandbox faire that really don't provide enough money or respect to be worth the time (from what I've seen). Combat also leaves me a bit unsatisfied. The only weapon I really like is the mind-control-squid-gun from the preorder, but it needs to hold more ammo.

Thanks for the early review. I am thinking I might get this one.

A few questions:

Is the combat like Red Dead Redemption (and I assume GTA) in that your reticule "sucks in" to the enemy? Or is it more like InFamous where you have to aim with the thumbstick more precisely than Red Dead?

I heard one of the IGN guys say he made his character a hot chick, does the voice acting carry through into the missions you get? What I mean is, I assume playing a female means a female's voice throughout the game, right? I know you can switch looks and sex anytime you like, but I assume you can stick to the same character throughout the game, is that true? This site seems to imply there are"all seven characters" and I'm not sure what that means.

I don't know about this one or the second one, but in the original Saints Row, I don't recall the character you play ever speaking. Been a long time though, could be mistaken.

In this one there are six voices to choose from. 3 of each gender.
There's talking, but it's mostly during the cutscenes.

I don't recall the sighting system being sticky, but I'll remember to have a look for less obvious assists next time. (like gently aiming outside of the sight) I recall wishing for easier targeting--but that's just me.

One thing I do remember, is that everybody (inc character) takes an awful lot of damage. "why does he still keep getting up?" levels of damage.

I'll say about this game what I have said elsewhere and include a great video posted by my buddy Rob in Maximum RD's Classic Games FB group...

People can have their Call of Duty and Battlefield and Skyrim... Any game that lets me sky dive out of my own personal gunship, Buck Ass Nekkid, land and then beat the shit out of an old lady while brandishing a GIANT purple Dildo Baseball Bat...GAME OF THE YEAR!

I have this game for the Xbox 360, but I haven't opened it yet. I'm still playing Skyrim and don't want to mess myself up by learning new controls.

I've started warming up to this game. The missions are pretty entertaining, especially watching my fat, pink character deliver the one-liners. I think I have a few brag clips of it, that I may look into sharing. There's less tedium than in most sandbox games (it's there, but well hidden), and the missions help break that up without being 'required to unlock more of the map' which is a game mechanic that I'm glad isn't in this sandbox.

For sure there is no aim assist. It's not a problem for me any more--I do most of my fighting with vehicles which makes everything pretty easy. Fitting a tank into my garage stall was one of the greatest challenges I've faced so far in the game. It's great that I have an unlimited supply of them now, but why can't I paint it pink to match my character, like I do on all the other vehicles?

The boats are also pretty entertaining, but the flight controls in airplanes really don't catch my fancy. IIRC there's an option to make them more complex that I should try out.

I have a hard time getting the Johnny GAT mascot van OUT of the Garage. Sometimes it fits and other times it gets stuck. :D

Unfortunately, I don't think the flight controls are the game's strongest feature. But, the rest of the game makes up for it, in my opinion. The Pony cart mission was just wrong. :D

Just a quick question for those with the game.

I have read online that the only multiplayer option for Saint's Row the Third is co-op. I am assuming this means split screen with you and a buddy on the couch? If so, why do you have to have the online pass code? Or does this mean the co-op is not split screen and can only be played over the Internet?

I only ask because I recently had a less than stellar experience of Gamestop removing online passes from New gamesI bought. As a result I won't be buying anything New from Gamestop ever again but I just want to know that buying Saint's Row as a New unopened game would be needed if I intend on playing co-op with my buddy on the couch (if I can).

I do support developers and I do buy brand new as often as I can, however the Gamestop situation has concerned me about even buying brand new.

So, not to turn this thread into a Gamestop-bashing nor a "always buy new" discussion, I just want to confirm that if I want to play co-op Saint's Row it is absolutelty necessary to have that code, correct?

My cousin, and my son both have this game for PS3 - it looks cool, I might pick it up for the 360, I played Saints Row 2 a lot - nearly got 100% in that game, might tackle this one too.

Finally beat the game, didn't have much time to play it due to work - but I did enjoy the story, and most of the missions were fun. Actually the first few missions are boring, but then things pick up and really get intense. I will say this is a very glitchy game, I have encountered numerous glitches - one mission the "swipe" screen kept repeating over and over, the mission wouldn't start forcing me to reload, sometimes when doing a quick car jack (Bo Duke-In) you will take continuous damage until you die, or sometimes the car will explode. Sometimes when I am doing the car theft list the target vehicle will be "destroyed" even before I can even spot the thing. Playing online is fun, but it seems everyone uses cheates on this game that I've found, and I tend to be a trophy/achievement hound, so I hate using cheats - also once you get to a high enough level your character basically becomes invincible anyway. Over all, fun game, despite the glitches.

Does anyone know how to get a policeman's hat in the game for your character? It looks like they exist. I mean, [minor spoiler] when you burst in and see Burt Reynolds, there's a chick sitting on his lap wearing a policeman's hat so I assume this is something you can equip your character with, but when Googling Saint's Row 3 hats I cannot find anything like a policeman's hat in any of the lists.

I finally got into Saint's Row this weekend and I have some questions.

I've played for a little while, couple of hours, I have Reputation Level 5 and have just unlocked Assassinations. But where are they? I have bought a couple of businesses so I have some money coming in now which is good but upgrading my weapons is pretty expensive so I am mostly sticking with the weapons bad guys drop.

I guess I need to do more of the story-based missions before I am powerful enough to take on the side missions? I have tried a few times to take out Gang Operations and so far the best I managed was surviving 4/5 waves but eventually so many gang members showed up I died. Keeps happening.

Couple of other minor questions:

How do you reload? I am on PS3. I have read you hit X to reload but when I do that I jump instead.

The purplue stars I see on my hud indicate my notoriety, right? I can decrease that by going into a crib or business I own?

I have been called to do some minor missions like annoy the cops but I keep failing them. Am I supposed to remain within the red circle until some time has passed or something?

Should I just play on with the story-related missions until I am tougher before I take on these side missions? I like the look of them but man are they ever hard.

And speaking of the weapons that bad guys drop, why am I not picking up their ammo? Most games allow you to replentish your ammo by picking up dead guys' weapons. All I seem to pick up is the weapon and since I already own it nothing more seems to happen. Am I supposed to hit a button to pick up the ammo instead?

Otherwise really enjoying this game, and I normally do not like GTA style games. The humor and customization in this one rocks.

PS: from my earlier post, doesn't look like the policeman's hat is possible but that's okay because apparently my character's hair always turns into a pony tail when I put a hat on anyway so kinda useless for what I wanted to do.

Nevermind I found my answers.

Here they are, if anyone else gets stuck...

On your phone you need to select Saint's Book to find Assassinations, along with car thefts and ... a third activity (can't recall the title just now)

Not true, if you call Shaundi to assist you (on the phone) some of the easier side missions are definitely do-able but there are some that are still very challenging. Playing more main missions will beef you up enough to handle those and you eventually unlock other homies to assist you (like Pierce).

Actually to reload is Square, not X

Yes and yes.

Yes for any event that has a red circle, stay within it. If you leave, you fail that activity. If the bad guys are too tough, call a homie like Shaundi or Pierce to help.

You only pick up ammo for weapons you own, if prompted to hold Square to swap weapon then do so and you will start picking up its ammo

And finally two more items I researched today.

1) How do you drift while driving?
Hit X

2) How do you shoot while driving?
Use R1 to fire.
