I am trying to use the 30 lives code on Contra for the first time in 20 years. Is it.. up up down down left right left right b a start? What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

not sure about that one. It worked for me the last time I tried it...somewhere around 1995.

That's the code alright, but often times it takes me several tries to get it right.
I think you do have to finish the code before the opening title screen finishes scrolling too...

Finally got it right, I think it's an issue of percise timing. And about 45 lives later, I beat the game.
