If you watch this video long enough of Smurf Paint 'N' Play Workshop, in addition to the standard Smurfs theme song, all of the background music from Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel's Castle is heard, too (both the "Simple Gifts" song heard in the overworld, and Beethoven's "6th Symphony (The Pastoral)" as heard in the caves and the castle).

I still believe that Coleco decided to release this, instead of just expanding on their previous Smurfs title for the Super Game Module or as the ADAM DDP.

A listing of where each of the songs is heard:
Original Smurfs theme: Outside the Mushroom House (depicted in the instructions as "Outside a Smurf Cottage," press 8 on the Hand Controller keypad to select)
Simple Gifts, 1st movement: Inside the Mushroom House (depicted in the instructions as "Papa Smurf's Living Room," press 7 on the Hand Controller keypad to select)
Simple Gifts, 2nd movement: The river crossing (depicted in the instructions as "The River and the Cave," press 0 on keypad to select)
Beethoven's 6th Symphony, 1st Movement: Gargamel's Castle (depicted in the instructions as "Gargamel's Kitchen," press * on keypad to select)

Smurf PnP, as well as other titles released by Coleco (CPK: Playground, Dr. Seuss, Telly Turtle, Monkey Academy), were developed due to the growing trend by many companies to capitilize on the educational warez market. What better way to compete against the computer market than to show that a videogame console could be used as an educational tool as well especially considering that parents were becoming a lot more educated themselves as to the benefits of these types of programs.

As far as Super Smurf, I guess we will never know for sure one way or the other. What we do know is that the plug was pulled on the ADAM in January of 1985 (probably even a few months earlier by top executives) and Coleco made a very large "empty promise" to continue software development for the ColecoVision and the ADAM. They had no intention to release further titles after this Jan. '85 announcement (in my mind) as can be seen by the fact that they never officially released titles like Super Sub-Roc, The Best of E.A., Jeopardy and SmartBASIC v2.0 (all with 1984 copyrights) even though the software development was complete or near complete in all their cases.

Pretty much the same game as Smurf Rescue with some enhanced graphics and new scenes
