Super Mario Bros. 3 was amazing when it came out, but Super Mario World took it to the next level. It's hard for me to go back to SMB3 these days when I have the option of playing the other.

As much as I love SMB3, my vote went to Super Mario World because everything about it is, well, better. Must be because one is on the NES and the other is on the SNES.

I had to vote Super Mario 3.
SMW is a great game, but excusing the graphics and the overall size of/number of levels that the NES just wasn't capable of, the Star Road was NOT what it should have been, it should have been a throw back to the Warp Pipes of SMB1, IE allowing you to warp ahead.
And the Cape was just terrible for flying, give me the Raccon Mario and the occasional P-Wing for the really tricky parts ANYday over that crappy up/down mess of trying to fly with the Cape.

if they shared the same graphics (both on NES or both on SNES), SMB3 would probably reign. different mechanics make the two superior to each other in different ways. they're just not on the same level with each other such as Sonic 1 VS Sonic 2 (which of course Sonic 2 is better), so this poll isn't really a fair fight for SMB3.

If you grew up with 3, there is no way you can vote World. 3 was so mind-blowing, that even with the advancements of World, you cannot vote it better.

Super Mario Bros. 3 was one of the first games I played and started my love for gaming, but Super Mario World is my favorite of the two games. I can spend all day just filling up save files with 100 percent completion runs and never get bored.

I think it is a fair fight, as a good game is a good game. Let's take your Sonic example. I MUCH prefer Sonic on the SMS, as opposed to Sonic for the Mega Drive (Genesis). It's just a better game.

I'm ignoring the fact that SMW is graphically superior, and my vote still went to SMW. The level design is so much better, the game flows great, and is much more fun. My only nitpick is that SMW doesn't have the suit power-ups, but flying with the cape is so much fun!

As much as I love to play world, the only Mario game better than smb3 for me is Mario 64. I love both of them, but 3 is better imo.

This is exactly how I feel

And no doubt SMW is awesome, I love it

But SMB3 is in my blood stream, I think I played it for 6 months straight after it was released, it never left my NES

For fun I'd choose SMW.
For challenge (and fun, of course) I'd go with SMB3.

I've put more miles on SMW just because the enticement is there to get 100%.

Looks like we're nearly in a dead heat! :)

I voted for SMW partially out of nostalgia; I got it when I was about 10 for Christmas, along with an SNES. As a bonus, Santa had set it up for us kids, so we came downstairs the first thing that we saw was the title screen.

SMB 3 is a great game of course, perhaps one of the best.

Other favorites for me are Galaxy 1, SMB 3 on the GBA (awesome remake), SML 1, and the new Super Mario 3D Land.

SMW is great, but SM3 changed everything. So SM3.

Super Mario World is fun and all, but it's just too easy. Super Mario Bros. 3 was mind-blowing when it came out, because it was just a huge leap forward. I personally wasn't "wowed" by SMW. The only thing that 'World' had going for it were the graphics. SMB3 on Super Mario All*Stars has SMW beat, by far, because then 'world' loses its edge with the visuals.

I grew up on SMW, so I'm probably biased towards that game. To me SMW feels like I'm a small person in a huge, huge world. SMB3 didn't seem to have that same feel. SMB3 is still an incredible game, too.

The way I see it, i compare smw with smb3 on super mario all stars, because i dont like the nes version of the game very much. Smw wins overall.

It's pretty simple to me. Both great games, but you can save in Super Mario World. So I just prefer it. I also love exploring the one world, as opposed to 8 different lands.

SMB3 for me. Here's my top 5 Mario games:

1 - SMB3
2 - New Super Mario Bros. (DS)
3 - Super Mario 3D Land
4 - Super Mario World
5 - Super Mario Bros.

For the record, SMW2: Yoshi's Island blows all these away, but I don't consider it a Mario game. It's a Yoshi game.

I love them both, but I prefer Super Mario World. But Super Mario Bros. 3, especially with its 16 bit upgrade, still comes very close.

I thought the cape mechanics were just fine and that flying was easy. And you can use Star Road to finish the game quickly. And although you can't use it to skip ahead other than to Bowser, it's still handy once you open it all up to quickly navigate around the world.

My vote is for Super Mario World. The bright graphics and catchy music are a step above Super Mario 3, in my opinion. I also have to laud the features like the cape, one-world map, and Yoshi. Sure, it's a little easy in terms of difficulty, but that just makes it easier to pick up and play in my view.
