I'd presume that Gamestop is paying for the exclusive, at which point Nintendo wouldn't need to make the sales in volume.
It would be interesting (at least to me) to know what kind of deal has been worked out between GameStop and Nintendo. Crush 3D, the Circle Pad Pro, and Xenoblade are all GS exclusives. Plus GS had exclusive sales, via a point card, for the download of the Kid Icarus 3D remake for the first month of its availability. There are also rumors floating around that Pandora's Tower and another 3DS title will be GS exclusives.
It's not like Nintendo has a warehouse full of these products that they are trying to unload at any price because they aren't selling. These are all new products that have to be produced in order to sell and I can't imagine Nintendo manufacturing them for pennies on the dollar just for GameStop. Doesn't sound like the typical Nintendo business model.
GS makes money, that's for sure. But to fund all of the above projects with the hope to not only make their investment back but also return a profit on products that probably wouldn't be huge sellers on any store shelf.... that doesn't sound like the typical GS business model.
It would be interesting as hell to me to know the real story.
