When I turn the thing on, all it does is move up. I made it face a TV screen with static, and that's all it does still. Move up. Is this what it does when nothing is happening? His eyes will not light up! It's maddening!

Short answer, yes he's probably broken, most of them are.

However, in the event that he's NOT broken, you should know a couple of things.

First, you don't mention it, but you need a ROB game for him to do anything. Gyromite is the most common, and if I remember right, even has a menu for testing ROB.

Second, his eyes don't light up, they are more like cameras that see the flashes on the screen. The flashes are code that tell him to do something.

Hi guys,

I used to send my ROB to Nintendo of America to get it fix! I doubt that they do that now!

Well, I think I'll get Gyromite tomorrow to really see if he's really broken. It's weird though, you'd think he would just stand there motionless instead of moving his arms up.

I can't imagine that the internals of the ROB are that complex. Main issue seems to be the gears stripping. Found a couple links that might help

Well, I got Gyromite today and with the test part I figured out he can go up and down as well as close and open his hands, but he can't go left nor right. Any way to fix this?

Well, as it turns out I CAN'T UNSCREW THE F^&$ING SCREWS! Anyone know where to get a really cheap power drill? And why do they have to make them so impossibly tight to begin with? I'm not talking about just the ROB, but electronics in general!

Too bad you don't have some other test cart... ;-)
But seriously, when you turn it on, it should simultaneously go all the way to the top while the arm open up, and rotate all the way to the right. then it will return to center and stay at the top.
If you don't hear the left/right motor, it could be a loose wire, or motor issue, not gears. If you watch my video, the reset part is at the 35 second mark, that is the same thing that happens at turn on.
The eyes do not light up. There is a led on the top that lights up when it receives a command.

Something else to keep in mind. What kind of TV are you using (I'm assuming analog CRT)? I really doubt ROB will work with a flat panel considering he uses the same tech that is in the light gun. Just a thought.

Yes, but you have not received it yet, so you can't use it to test, yet.

Very good point, I should have mentioned that myself.
