What is the meaning of "grind" in relation to this game? Running around killing beasties to build up my hit points?

Building experience points to level up, yes. You can't run straight through this game like in the Legend of Zelda, you will need to purposely try to level up, otherwise it will be a b*tch to complete.

Looking for beasties who give you a lot of experience points and spending a good amount of time just killing them to level up your character.

That's grinding.

It's so satisfying to destroy an enemy with one hit that you were having a bit of trouble beating earlier on in the game. Just so satisfying.

Wah! wah! Yes, I'm whining. ;) My girl and sprite have received powers from Undine in the water palace cave. I've gone back to the underground caverns and found the crystal orb I'm supposed to use freeze on. But for the life of me, I can't figure out how to select freeze, or use magic! I hold down attack, and it "winds up", but nothing happens when I release the button. What am I missing?

To use magic, you bring up your circle menu, press up or down to find the magic section, then pick the spell you want to use. It will then let you choose who you want to cast it on. Repeat as many times as you need to use the spell.

Use spells often to make them stronger.

^ Basically what he said, but you can track to see how close your spells are to leveling up on one of your status screens.
