Interesting article.

Killick represents a new generation that resists the notion that the games industry is a boys' own club. "I see a lot of it as unacceptable," she says. "All the over-sexualised female characters, hiring women to 'decorate' stands at games events. I don't think this stuff has a place in the future of the industry.

As interesting as Deus Ex, Uncharted and Gears of War 3 are, they still feature men in the central, playable roles; the anatomically impossible fantasy creature Lara Croft remains the high watermark for female lead characters – and that has to change. Perhaps when the percentage of women in development increases, it will.

What about the male characters in gears of war who look like they have been taking steroids and spending 5 hours a day in the gym? Isn't it the same thing?

I can't stand the guardian by the way, but thanks for posting the article :)

The only reason I found the article is because it mentions the 7800.

Kind of preachy... I actually enjoy playing the exaggerated characters like Lara Croft, it's not a male/female thing; remember Rambo, Terminator, etc?

Can you imagine how different the games would be if all the characters resembled all us fat slobs that play the games?

Par for the course for the Guardian. But really, she has a point. Women are very often sex objects in games. The last game I remember playing with a non-sexualized female main character is Beyond Good and Evil and that came out years ago.

I always thought the anatomically impossible fantasy creature Ms Pac-Man was the high watermark for female lead characters.

Anyone who thinks games are a boy's club needs to go check out farcebook etc.My wife gets excited whenever she wins 6000 tokens or whatever- but what can anyone do with these tokens? Play more games, I think. I just don't get it.

Consider the audience these games are aimed at, sex crazed basement dwelling teen virgins.

Interesting article, I guess.. but, women in the video game industry is hardly new.
Anyone besides me play Theatre of Death by Psynosis? Nearly half of the programming team were women....
