A big thanks to IntellivisionDude for trading this to me!

Just got this and now im sure that this was an official release by CBS and not a homemade thing. Cmart also has this exact thing from Australia on the way to him, so that helps confirm it legitimacy. Does anyone else have this version or any other similar?

Very cool, can't wait to get mine. :lust: I really wonder if there are any others like this? Carnival would seem to be the most logical candidate given release dates, but it wouldn't surprise me if DK was the only one based on sales volume and the popularity of DK in general. Anyone in PAL land seen any other games in clamshells?

There are some Colecovision and possibly 2600 clamshell versions out there. I thought i seen one in an auction.

Isnt it weird how Dude got this and there just happened to be one on Ebay AU at the same time?

Yeh, i think Carnival or Venture are good possibiliteis. But DK may be the only one. I wonder why they went through the trouble of releasing it in in this case?

Does it say where it was produced/released?

hey, i will take some better quality pics for you to keep records of this. I will compare the manuals as well and post pics.

Price? that is difficult to say i guess. INTVDUDE traded this with some guy in Australia, probably not for much. And i gave him a set of Orphan Overlays 3 for it.

I dont know what this would sell for in an open auction.

Cmart, what price tag would you put on it?

Mine was part of a package of games with a boxed system so kinda hard to say, I'd guess $30, maybe $50 in a bidding war as it's obviously a hard version to find. Mine arrived yesterday by the way, very cool. I didn't realize from your pics how small the instruction manual was.

I would say on a god day, maybe upwards of 75 or more. If i got in a bidding war i would of paid more than 100 for it, simply because i have never seen one before and they are pretty rare , even in AU.

By Memory these clam shell releases were for the rental market only (no retail copies in shops) So any that survive would be extremely rare. I remember a few CBS/Coleco titles (and a few Atari VCS titles) in clam shells at my local video hire but the card-board boxes were all you got in the stores. As for exactly which titles were released in clam-shells... sorry it was thirty years ago and I was just 10 at the time.

Seeing the pictures jogged my memory.

No definitely official. But CBS/Coleco would have made only enough titles in this format to sell to Video-Hire shops for the purpose of hiring out. The copies in the stores for the public to buy were the standard cardboard boxes.

These purpose-built clams might have been a promotional thing as well. Because the boxes of video games for hire often wore out and the games were often re-packaged into generic clam-shell cases due to durability.

Normally this was ad-hoc done by the store owners and are easy to spot (cut out front and back panels and the cart doesn't quite fit right in the clamshell) and always looked shabby. I have seen a few of these over the years in bric-a-brac shops.

I do remember a small number of titles that looked great because they were in proper housings with the colour printed wrap-around cover. I remember Donkey Kong (as I hired it and until I started to collect games again didn't own a copy) and at least another CBS/Coleco title in this format for the Intellivision (Carnival?).

Rental makes sense. This definatly was not made by a local rental store. the quality is too nice. Plus i have seen 2600 and colecovision versions. There is not probably not too many around that survived.
