So, I don't use EBay much and I'm hoping some of you vets can help offer some tips and advise to help increase my chances of getting a certain item. :)

Recently I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of the guide for Oblivion: Game of the Year. This is the last edition that was released, with the original game and both expansions (Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles). Unlike the eariler versions of the game guides, though, it seems Prima produced this one in very small ammounts. Average sale price of the book is about $60-80 on EBay. :-o

Needless to say, that's more then I can afford to spend and I was about to give up hope until I noticed that a couple of auctions had ended with BIN prices of $15-20. That's more in my range. (Willing to go up to $30 for a max).

So I decided to try the auto notification function that EBay has a shot. I set up a few watch lists with some common ways the guide was listed, such as 'oblivion game of the year guide' and EBay will send me a e-mail automaticaly anytime a auction is posted that has those words. Problem is, I've never used this before and I'm not sure how well this works. But given that I suspect that if another copy of the book is listed for cheap with a BIN it won't last long, and I can't spend all day just watching EBay.

Does anyone else have any tips they are willing to share to increase my chances of getting this item? :)

I suppose it doesn't matter much until the last minutes. You don't need to spend all day watching. Just bid at the last moment and hope that someone doesn't do the same. Other than that, there are no special tactics or anything else.

Search by "newly listed" in addition to ending soonest. Sometimes you can find a recently added "buy it now" that is below the market value. Just be sure to verify the seller as being legit.

The problem with being e-mailed with new matching listings is that eBay doesn't do it in real time. Maybe I have it set up wrong, but usually I get the notifications overnight after a matching listing was added in the past day.

I hope this helps!
