I decided to play a round of Space Invaders before going to bed tonight, and instantly I was taken back to my childhood, playing this game for hours on end with my brother. We played the crap out of this game. We had seen and played SI in the arcades, but THIS was the SI for us.

I applaud those who put the time and effort into more accurate versions of SPace Invaders -- and other 2600 arcade ports for that matter -- but for me, no matter how good the hacks and "from the ground up" versions of these games are, they cannot hold the nostalgia, and dare I say fun of the original titles. And yes, I include Pac-Man.

It was all there. The sights and sounds of my childhood. No new version can capture that. I am not knocking the efforts of the newer recreations. THey are great and fun in their own right. But for me, the classic versions are the real deal.

The fun of nostalgia comes from refreshing our memories, which are based, of course, on which versions of the games we enjoyed the most and spent the most time on.

Personally, I remember playing the coin-op space invaders in restaurants, bars, arcades, malls, and just about everywhere I went back when it was first popular, and playing it again always reminds me of those days.

I never played the VCS version much until the last ten years or so, but I agree that the REAL fun comes from remembering.
