I'm having a problem with the SORTDIR command in Spartados 4.44.

I was typing in some programs from a book and saving the files. I sorted them a couple of times as I added more programs to the folder with no problems. After I got to a couple of pages of programs (about 50 or 60 programs I think) they stopped sorting. I am up to 70-80 programs and it still won't sort them anymore. I moved them all to a new folder and tried it again but no nothing changed.

Any suggestions?

There's possibly a known bug/issue I'd say.

You could "assist" by creating multiple temporary directories, e.g. for A-H, I-P, Q-Z or similar. Then move files into them according to name and do the sort on those smaller temp dirs. Then move the files into the target directory starting with the A-H.

Have you tried changing your syntax? SORTDIR D1: /T and the next time use a different parameter SORTDIR D1: /N or any of the other endings. /NTSDX Maybe even sort a different partition or folder between sorts.

Weird. I moved a few files to another folder and tried to sort them. Nothing worked. It gave me a message about the files being sorted but it didn't sort them. I just used the /N name sort but it didn't work. I only had four files in the folder as well. The weird thing is that I was able to sort the first 30-40 files a couple of weeks ago. I tried sorting a couple of other folders but nothing. It's like SORTDIR has totally failed.

I'd run CLX to ensure there are no errors in the directory structure.

What is CLX? I looked through the Spartdos X 4.44 manual and I can't find anything on it.

It's on the support disk (toolkit).

Thanks.

Unfortunately it didn't work. My next step is to try upgrading to 4.45.

Well I upgraded to 4.45. It was nice and easy. Thanks guys.

The down side is that it made no difference. I can't sort anything. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or not. I don't think so.

I was using : "SORTDIR D: /N" while I had SDX set to the right folder. I tried a number of folders with a different number of files in them and I got the same result. It says 'Files Sorted' but nothing was. I tried a number of different switches (by date, by name, etc.) as well with no results. Frustrating since everything else with Spartados is really amazing.

Yea! I got it to work. I set the active folder to the root: CHDIR ..
Then I did SORTDIR PROATARI> /N

I'm not sure if it was because I was in the folder or I was using the D: or what but it worked.

Thanks guys,

Allan

Just using D: will actually look at D4: (aince A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4). This has tripped me up before.

Which is probably why it was always so quick. Sorting 0 files is usually pretty fast. :)
