I have been using Z26 for some time, but since the bump in versions, I haven't been able to run the newer versions of z26 (they simply crash quietly, is this a bug? I don't know)

So I've been looking tirelessly for an Emulator out there that runs in DOS/Win95 that can run the newer bankswitching methods (like Boulderdash uses) and So far I've turned up nothing.

Any ideas, or am i barking up the wrong tree?

For the curious, I am running a P200 w/ MMX Tech and for the most part, every 8-bit emulator I have has been pretty good on here. It's mostly for fun ( and because it has TV out, it's perfect for emulators of old stuff)

If you're willing to upgrade, Stella has a proper binary for Win98.

True, but while there is a Win98 release, it isn't really supported (in that I have no way to test in anything less than XP). And I don't think a 200 Mhz machine is fast enough for current versions of Stella anyway.

Finally (and not trying to be a killjoy), the next major release of Stella (4.0) is going to drop support for all Windows below XP, since the version of SDL I'll be using won't support pre-WinXP.

I suggest sticking with an older version of z26. I think the newer versions don't work because they require OpenGL, which incidentally Stella will also require in 4.0.

I wish I could, but I only have a CD that works for PCs without Windows. I installed Win95C because it was actually faster for what I was doing at the time. Now it's becoming a problem qhwn everyone moved to VS2008... -_-

Sorry for the double-post bump, but what about PCAE? is it updated any more? I hear it still has a DOS version.

EDIT: trying to go to their site, my AV kicked in and blocked it saying it had some malicious code. Whoopsie!

As far as I know, the last version of PCAE that was released was 2.7, and then the developer closed up shop so to speak. There were a few variations of 2.7 released to resolve bugs; the last one was 2.7c. I have a ZIP file for 2.7c that includes the source and binary. It's rather large, so I use GSplit to email it to people. I can email it to you if you want to try it.

PCAE "works" but it can't play any recent homebrews that I've tried. Bummer. I guess I can look at the Z26 source code when I get the chance.

Heh, back when I left the Atari community for a while, DOS was still supported. I suppose everyone dropped it in 2006 when 9x finally died, huh?

As I said, the 3.x series of z26 uses v-sync'ed OpenGL exclusively. If you don't have it, then it won't run at all. I don't think looking at the source will help, unless you're willing to rip out the OpenGL code and revert to earlier versions. At which point you might as well just use the last version in the 2.x series. Now, if your problems are also in the 2.x series, then I'm sorry, I have no further suggestions.

Heh, the problem is that I think 2.x series used VS2008 or something to compile, which win95 can't use without some hacking.

Yes, you're right, I forgot about that issue. For Stella, I have to maintain two projects; one for VS2005 (for Win98/2K), and one for VS2010 (for WinXP onward, including 64-bit). But I'm pretty sure that even VS2005 won't support Win95, so you'd need something older than that (perhaps VS 6?).

VS2005 can compile for win95 if you hack the EXE not to look for IsDebuggerPresent.

Also VC6 will work perfectly (if Stella 2 still compiles in it)
