There don't seem to be any interesting, platform-specific titles for either of these systems. Am I missing anything, or do their libraries really consist of just a bunch of "me, too" games?

Astrocade had

1. Incredible Wizard - a great version of "Wizard of Wor "
2. Space Fortress - one of the funniest game soundtracks ever
3. Cosmic raiders - a nice defender type game.
4. Galaxian - an excellent version of galaxian with nice animations for the time.
5. Solar Conquerer - a shootem up game somewhat reminiscent of asteroids, but different.
6. Artillery Duel - a nice turned base strategy game.

Thanks for the overview!

It looks like Incredible Wizard, Space Fortress, and Galactic Invasion (the Galaxian clone?) are readily available, while Cosmic Raiders, Solar Conqueror and Artillery Duel seem not to be.

Three games is way below my minimum number of games to allow myself to have a system. To keep myself from buying everything ever made, I try to make sure that there's at least 12 games that I enjoy playing for any given system, at least four of which I must enjoy playing regularly. :(

those systems are great and have some fun games
but they are not "necessary" if you have other 8 bit consoles

The Astrocade seems way ahead of its time in terms of audio-visual capabilities. Compare to the Atari 2600.
