When I was a kid I did. I was a map nerd (even back then) and named them all after large cities in Texas: From left: El Paso, San Antonio, Austin, Ft. Worth, Dallas, and Houston.

Here are what they were originally called.

"It is interesting to note that while the arcade game set no specific time or place, the original design cast the six cities in the game as six major cities on the west coast of the United States: Eureka, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and San Diego. However, the manual for the Atari 2600 version of the game provides an entirely fictional back story for the game, presented here."

And I guess Dave Theurer, suffered from nightmares of these cities being destroyed by a nuclear blast.

I name my cities 'Tempest', 'Stan Jr', 'Moycon' and other longtime AA'ers' names. Tempest usually buys the farm first. :skull: :P

Hey that sounds like a fun 5200 hack (not sure you could do it on 2600) ... change the cities graphic to a blocky 'person' graphic with names underneath.

Someone needs to write a reverse Missile Command for the 2600.

i read in some video game/arcade book that they were originally gonna have dip switchable city names based on what part of the country the person was in. that got scrapped along with the more populated control panel/console thing they had too.

What a fascinating bit of trivia! How could you make the control panel more complex? We have to aim the cursor, with a trackball - ok.. And you have to shoot missiles from bases with 3 buttons, ok! What else is there? Control detonation time and delay? Control missile direction and speed? Recall or reassign missiles to different targets?

Your pretty close Trinity! Go for it!!!

When I was a kid in the '80s I used to name the cities after major U.S. cities. This made the game a bit more exciting.

Kind of off topic, but has anyone seen the documentary "High Score"? It's about a guys quest to break the Missile Command arcade high score. Excellent movie!

I saw it. It is rather slow-moving..
And now I scored 203,680, thereby breaking the twin galaxies record. I got bored and turned the damned thing off.
