The 360 and PS3 hardware have tons of life left in them. I'd love to see the consoles open up to even more indy developers so that fresh and risky ideas get a chance to advance gaming. We don't need new consoles from Microsoft and Sony, we need new game developers.

The Wii, on the other hand, could seriously do with a refresh... but I'm not convinced the WiiU is it. I don't think we need more gimmicks, simply more capable hardware. Give us a Wii with HD and better graphics so that old and new Wii games alike will use our HD TVs properly.

Like others have said, I've got tons of stuff from the last decade to still play. Then there's the backlog of 90s games, then the 70s-80s stuff I missed the first time around, and some home computers I didn't own until recently, and...

What I can't understand is how Microsoft and Sony can look at the success and longevity of the PS2, yet still think they need to sink some serious cash into another new console. It's like they both refuse to learn from the past and instead just want to blaze through the future. It's mind boggling.

When I look at the high end PC games I think, "Yeah, that looks nice". What I don't think is, "Wow! That looks so nice I would totally drop $400 on a new system and another $120 on a couple new games! That's a perfectly reasonable return on my investment!"

What PS3 and X-Box 360 are releasing right now is just fine with me. And no way am I going to be on board with a next gen system at this point. I could play everything in my library right now and be happy until the next gen drops to under $300. That's assuming I never buy another clearance game for the current systems. I'd say there's a better chance of me getting back into PC gaming in all honesty.

A lot of us are saying "I have too many games from the current gen to worry about the next." I get that, I really do. I'm in the same boat myself.

But really, when has that ever been a factor? Have you ever bought a new console because there were no good games left to play on the old one?

Technically, no. But there's a big difference between no good games being left, and a ton of good games being left. For me, there's still a ton of good games left on the 360 I haven't even played yet, much less invested some time into. But I see what you're saying. In the age of Gamefly, a lot of people play the latest and greatest right when they come out and ship them back when they're done with them. And a new system just means more of a selection of new releases.

That has definitely happened in the past, leading to unexpected longevity in otherwise "obsolete" consoles. The 2600 was still active in many homes when the superior CV and 5200 were out. Many families didn't replace their NES for a decade, until the 3D consoles were in full swing. And that was back when each generation of consoles brought massive advancements to home gaming.

Core gaming hasn't advanced much over the last few generations of consoles. The presentation is better, but we're way past the point of diminishing returns with how graphics improve game-play. Maybe I simply don't have the imagination to figure it out, but what is another generation going to offer that makes it indespensible? (And don't ask me to replace the crap I've already replaced in recent years such as upgrading to HD TVs, because I'm not going to upgrade again anytime in the near future.)

I don't think AtariAge people represent the typical demographic. AA people are happy playing with 2600 and NES games.

You might be 100% correct as I never thought of it that way.

But the bottom line for me is that I'm simply quite happy with the current systems I own and all the games I still have to break the shrinkwrap on. The features the current consoles offer... Blu-ray, Netflix, MLB, YouTube, etc etc... along with promised additional features leave me pretty contented.

Heck, I just got a 3DS system as a Christmas gift from the wife-unit. Though I had been interested in the 3DS, I had found no motivation to go out and buy one as my DSi XL served my mobile gaming needs pretty well.

I'll look at the Wii-U but I'm pretty content playing Mario, Kirby, Donkey Kong, and Zelda in 480p, so features other than HD graphic's will have to persuade me to open my wallet.
