I have installed a new motherboard with G41 chipset and now can't use Opel GL mode in Stella. It tells me that Open GL failed going back to software... It was working on my Nvidia Geforce7100 GS.

Any chance of having the Open GL mode on Intel G41 chipset?

This has nothing to do with Stella itself. Very likely, you need to install the latest OpenGL drivers. I've never used the G41 chipset before, so I don't know where to get them. Perhaps on the Intel site, or the homepage of the motherboard manufacturer??

EDIT: If you're using Windows, try this link. If you're using Linux, I'm not sure if the OpenGL drivers are updated to work with G41 yet.

Thanks for the link, I am using Windows XP. Unfortunately nothing has changed after installing the latest drivers (.exe package). Open GL failed, fallback to software.

Try running a testing program that specifically tests whether OpenGL is installed, and what version is being used. I don't use Windows, so I can't say what program to use. I can say that I've tested Stella on the older Intel cards (and both ATI and Nvidia stuff) in XP and it was fine. But I have no experience whatsoever with the latest CoreIx chips. Actually, I do have a Corei7, but use an Nvidia card with it :)

I have found this program called OpenGL Viewer and it reports that I have OpenGL version 1.1, driver version nvoglnt 31-X-11 - is this the problem?

edit: With the new drivers, I don't see any OpenGL options in the properties any more... Strange. I might try to revert back to the old drivers and play with the settings. Which OpenGL attributes are needed to run Stella?

The 'nvoglnt' thing you mention is an Nvidia OpenGL ICD. I'm not sure why your system is identifying an Nvidia OpenGL setup when it should be using the built-in GMA X4500 graphics chip. According to the documentation, the X4500 should be capable of OpenGL 2.0.

Did you install the Nvidia card on your current system and then remove it? Perhaps there's parts of the old Nvidia driver kicking around. I suggest completely uninstalling all Nvidia and G41 X4500 OpenGL stuff, reboot, then install the new G41 OpenGL stuff again.

EDIT: It just occurred to me that this isn't a new computer, just a motherboard upgrade. In other words, you didn't re-install Windows. In that case, it's very likely that Windows is confused about the drivers. Normally before you install OpenGL drivers for a new card, you un-install the old ones first. I didn't realize this wasn't a new system, or I would have suggested that up-front.

I did not remove any Nvidia drivers. I thought Windows were smart enought to do that... I will try to fix this.

To be honest, over the years I've never had much success with upgrading to a new board in Windows without actually reinstalling Windows as well. If you just added a new hard drive or another video card, it wouldn't be too bad. But changing the motherboard itself is major surgery, so to speak. I won't tell you what to do; just my personal experiences with Windows. From experience and reports I've read, any old install of Windows on a new motherboard is almost always likely to cause problems down the road.

Oh, and sorry for confusing the G41 with the newer Intel corei series. The G41 (as an older chipset) should definitely work with Stella. I think Stella requires OpenGL 1.2 or 1.3, and 2.0 for the TV filters.

Oh, and I forgot to mention. Since this is a new motherboard, probably use the CD that came with it for drivers. That way, you don't have to search online for what you need, potentially installing the wrong thing. The CD should clearly label what application installs the OpenGL drivers. Once you get it working, then you can go online to find the very latest version.

Hm, it seems that installing Windows from scratch will be the only good option to see if there is any improvement possible. I have uninstalled the NVidia display drivers from Programs, I have also changed to the old Intel driver that came with the CD. That OpenGL analyser still reports the version 1.1... BTW the motherboard is Asus P5G41T-M LX and they claim "Supports Microsoft® DirectX 10, OpenGL 2.1 ". I don' see any conflicts in Device manager right now.
