here we are 6 years or so into this gen and i find myself still waiting for certain genres to appear.

where are the space combat games? the only one i can name is sylpheed for the 360. i can't even fathom how good a space combat game would look in 2012 but alas, theres none on the horizon. maybe i'm just silly thinking that manning the guns of a dreadnaught or crewing a starship over xbl would be fun.

where are the mech games? again i couldn't fathom how good a mechassault or mechwarrior would look in this day and age. the only one i know of is armored core and those aren't any fun (imo).

how about an exploration game like star control?

it just boggles my mind considering how many games and platforms are out now that there are still genres that don't have proper representation.

Isn't Capcom working on a Kinect-controlled version of Steel Battalion?

I miss the dungeon crawls (with coop mode) such as Baldur's Gate and Champions of Norrath on the PS2.

they are, but that begs the question "how the f$&k"? The first one needed that special controller with a hundred buttons

360 also got a port of the (then old and tired) Darkstar one. But this genre really needs a jumpstart.
I'm really surprised that sony seems to have no interest in their colony wars property.

...never thought this day would come, but the standard turn-based jrpg seems to be under-represented anymore.

I figure it'll have a rolled-up printout of basically the same panel. Just a guess.

There's only one Civilization game on consoles. That's really underrepresented.

Would be nice to see some more Point and Click adventure games! Aside from Zack and Wiki, Telltale has made every single example I can think of this generation, and while their efforts are in fact great, I'd like to see some more.

I'd love to play a game on my Xbox 360 that is like Star Control 2, but is different every time you restart from the beginning (locations of races, resources, and so on).

Pickings are slim but there is also Chromehounds (I think servers are shut down now so no online), Front Mission Evolved, WarTech Senko, also War World on Live Arcade.

At one time Mechwarrior reboot was coming to the 360...

Guessing maybe Mech games just don't sell here in the US?

We're starting to get more dungeon crawlers on Arcade (Crimson Alliance and Torchlight come to mind) I'd love to see more though - one of my favorites on the PS2 was the Bard's Tale remake.

Iwas going to go with "mech" games, but looks like you already did. Hey, Mech Assault for the Xbox was awesome looking, I could see that updated to having fully interactive environments, I mean, the last ones were cool, but the buildings were scripted and the environment itself was largely noninteractive.

How about virtual pet games? I mean, Viva Pinata was cool, but those are the only ones I can really think of (well, maybe sims pets, but I think that's just a plugin for sims, nolt a standalone game)

And yeah, space shooters, Star trek was cool in that old school sort of way, and Halo$each had an awesome space level, but no real standalone modern games I can think of.

How about real time (or even turn based) strategy games? I liked the likes of Advance Wars, and while I don't like timed missions or protect missions, Halo Wars was cool (till I got to that timed protect mission, then they lost me) That seems to be missing from the modern world of games.

I'm in complete agreement with some of the genres mentioned.

Space exploration
I love Starflight on the Genesis and I would actually buy a 360 if there was a similar game for it. If they can cram that much exploration goodness on a Genesis cart I can only imagine the galaxy that can be conjured up on a DVD disc. Even something like Escape Velocity (Mac) or Elite would be cool.

Space combat
No console has been able to match the experience of playing TIE Fighter or X-Wing on the Mac/PC. Even Rogue Squadron didn't make me feel like I was 100% in control of my fighter. I want something like TIE Fighter on a modern console. That game set the bar and hasn't been surpassed to date.

Agreed. I'd even be in favor of a TIE Fighter remake/upgrade, that is such a great game.

Damn Zack and Wiki, I still can't beat the game! I refuse to use a walkthrough.

Patience, guys. One step at a time. The game companies are currently topping up the market with some much needed first person shooters and hack n' slash titles.

Not so much a genre, but a franchise--why oh why has there not been a Star Wars Battlefront title for the current gen consoles? I loved those games on PS2, and would be really interested in seeing what can be done on the PS3. You'd think the money to be made from such a game would make it a no-brainer.

And no, the irony is not lost on me that I was bagging on FPS games and then went on to plead for a new Battlefront.

Overhead racers seem to have all but totally vanished. There are a few downloadable games, and psp minis, but no major releases that I can think of since Racing Gears Advance.

Car combat games. The Vigilante 8 remake was fantastic, and perhaps the new Twisted Metal game will spark some overdue interest, but I'd really love to see some new car combat games.

I'd also love to see some new classic dungeon crawlers in vein of old Bard's Tale/Wizardry/Dungeon Master.

Whatever happened to this? I seem to remember it being announced at some trade show in, like, 2010 but haven't seen anything since. I loved TM2, and was really hoping this game might redeem the franchise for the garbage it has put out since.

There've been a few new car combat games... but they've been horrible (Blood Drive). V8 remake WAS outstanding, though. Those dungeon crawlers are still being churned out, too. Wasn't there a new Wizardry last year? PSP and DS are full of 'em.

I don't know how true to the 'car combat' model it was, but split/second scratched my itch for explosive violence. Really well done game. Seems like another one came out about the same time, but it was like a kart racer with a more realistic (non-kart) look--I remember the ad making fun of mario kart, and me not liking its demo.
Also, wasn't there a twisted metal for psp? I don't know if it was new, or a port of a previous one.

It's being released on Valentine's Day this year.

I have Blood Drive which I kind of like. I don't know of any others, though. If you could recommend me a few titles I would totally appreciate it, man.

Yeah, new Wizardry, but it's exclusive to Playstation which I don't own. I've been tempted to buy a PS3 with the new Wizardry game being a big plus. I don't know of any other modern dungeon crawlers like that, though. First person with focus on creation of a party and insanely difficult mazes is what I like. I have a PSP and DS, but I don't play them very much. I'll have to swing through both sections next time I'm browsing some video games. Thanks for the head's up.
