I don't know of any other modern dungeon crawlers like that, though. First person with focus on creation of a party and insanely difficult mazes is what I like. I have a PSP and DS, but I don't play them very much. I'll have to swing through both sections next time I'm browsing some video games. Thanks for the head's up.

Yeah... first one that comes to mind is Etrian Odyssey series on DS. Music by Yuzo Koshiro, too! Thing is, dungeon crawlers are mainly made in Japan, where they're pretty popular... so you tend to wind up leading around a team of scantily-clad children. You could see this as a positive or a negative.

Yeah! That's what I'm looking for. Had to do some research on it, and sounds right up my alley. Love the idea of hand-mapping with the stylus, even if you won't have a nice folder of graph paper maps to show for it when you're done. And could probably do without the scantily-clad children, too. Thanks a million for the recommendation, man. I'm on it like...hmmm...something sticky that ends in "it", I guess.

Patience, guys. One step at a time. The game companies are currently topping up the market with some much needed first person shooters and hack n' slash titles.

You're actually correct it seems. FPS's and the like certainly seem to be much needed given how fast their fanbases tend to drop the title and pick up the next release in the genre. :ponder:

How about music mixer "games" (not so much a game, but I liked them) MTV Music Mixer 3 for the Xbox was like the last one (and it still couldn't top the late 90's PSX/PC version)

Rage has a mulitplayer car combat game on disc 3. DarkStar One is the closest your gonna get to an Elite type game on current console hardware.
Not sure if this helps...,

Mechwarrior is going to be a free to play onliine MMO on PC. http://mwomercs.com/...hwarrior-online

As for car combat, Twisted Metal is coming to the PS3 this year. The Armageddon Riders downloadable title was ok. Carmageddon Reincarnation is a downloadable title that is suppose to be out by the end of the year. It's being done by the guys who did the first two Carmageddon games.

I really enjoy simulation/strategy games and outside of Civ and some XBox Live downloadable games, those have been few and far between for a long time.

here we are 6 years or so into this gen and i find myself still waiting for certain genres to appear.

where are the space combat games? the only one i can name is sylpheed for the 360. i can't even fathom how good a space combat game would look in 2012 but alas, theres none on the horizon. maybe i'm just silly thinking that manning the guns of a dreadnaught or crewing a starship over xbl would be fun.

where are the mech games? again i couldn't fathom how good a mechassault or mechwarrior would look in this day and age. the only one i know of is armored core and those aren't any fun (imo).

how about an exploration game like star control?

it just boggles my mind considering how many games and platforms are out now that there are still genres that don't have proper representation.

Dude I couldn't agree with you more! Where are the Colony Wars or X-wings/TIE fighters or Blast Radius or Jedi Starfighters? Cripe would it kill somebody to make a new Wing Commander on Xbox 360? I've got Sylpheed and the Star Trek game which I like but I'd like to see more!

Mechwarrior I thought was supposed to be coming back. I've got Chromehounds, Front Mission and Wartech but I would like to see more Mechwarrior or something new.

I've got a lot of space combat games on the PC and a few Mech games that are still good but some more on the Xbox would be really great.

What about revamping some of the FMV games that broke new ground back in the day? An updated Night Trap would be an interesting alternative to the current batch of "horror survival" games.

I was thinking the same thing recently. Some of the FMV games made back then were very good -- it's just there was more bad then good stuff. But with today's tech and consoles, you could do a 'modern day' one very well.

I miss rally racers.

We've gotten a grand total of two games this console generation that were dedicated rally racers (The two WRC games and one of them didn't even see a North American release), a 3rd where rally racing was a significant component of the game (Dirt), and a few other games where it was an insignificant component to the game (Dirt 2/3, and GT5).

The PS2/Xbox/GCN/DC era got well over a dozen such games.

Actually this reminds me... long ago, before online gaming was huge and all they had were those mech games where you got into a little pod thing and they were all connected via cables, I envisioned a WWII bombing game where you were part of a B-17 bomber crew (or similar plane like a B-24 or Lancaster). You had a pilot, a gunner/bombadier, tail gunner, ball gunner, and two waist gunners (and maybe a radio man or navigator who manned another gun). You would fly simulated missions over German targets and get back again. In my original version, it would take hours to complete a game from take off, flight over the Channel, flight over the target and back again. With flak to avoid, fighters to shoot down, a target to bomb, and so on. On the trip back, the plane would be lighter and fly faster but might be damaged so it was no cake walk. Of course each position would be different enough that it would take some practice and skill to be proficient at it and rankings for individual positions could be posted based on stats peculiar to that position. I wouldn't want people always fighting over who got to be the pilot or whatever. I'd hope people would practice at one position to be the best they could be at that position.

Of course for today's online gaming this could be shortened so that the more boring uneventful parts were skipped, but I always thought that part of the fun/immersion of the game would be the waiting and watching for incoming fighters. Also, there could be others who were flying escort fighters or other bombers with their crews. Perhaps entire teams of people all flying in one simulated raid. And it could go the other way, too with German bombers flying over English targets with appropriate planes and positions and escort fighters... And of course, those fighters you were trying to shoot down could be other people playing the other side... And anything that didn't have an actual player could be simulated by the computer... tail gunner grounded (pun intended), the computer would take over that position. Picturing it kind of like playing a game of Rock Band when your drummer isn't there... he doesn't sign in so the drumming is done automatically. Of course, the computer controlled gunner isn't perfect and its skill level is based on the skill levels of the rest of the team.

But anyway, that was a game idea that I thought up long ago. It would probably work great for XBL or PSN as long as enough people were interested in the idea.

I don't think a sim like it sounds like you're talking about would work very well on XBL/PSN.

There are things sort of like what you want in the PC world, although on a smaller scale. I can remember doing a mission with some friends years ago in Pacific Fighters where we were about 3 SBD Dauntless dive bombers with a small fighter escort of Wildcats, all manned by us (My joystick was down so I was a gunner in one of the bombers) attacking a Japanese fleet defended by AI.

I imagine their latest game allows you to do that, although you'd probably be flying something like a He-111 or Ju-88 since it models the Battle of Britain. Can't think of what their name is for it (The team that made IL-2 Sturmovick).
