Hi all. A Lynx II and games I bought off eBay arrived today. The unit was described as "flawless," and while the cosmetic condition isn't that, it is very nice. What's not flawless is the screen. When I turn it on and turn the brightness all of the way down, here's what I see:

When I turn the brightness to 70%-80%, here's what I see:

So the game is playable, but you can see the pixel artifacts underneath the graphics. Also, you have to hold the screen at just the right angle to get the image. I have a Game Gear that has the same problem, so I suspect that bad caps are to blame. Am I right in regarding this unit as malfunctioning?

looks like the problem I had.

I had not used my unit in years and I found this sort of degradation to the LCD.

I replaced mine with one from Best Electronics, and sorted out the problem.

It was really fiddly to do though. The tails on the LCD were hard to get in the right place.

EDIT---
It would be nice to know what causes this, heat, lack of use or just old age?

Thanks, Sub. I think I'm going to return this to the seller unless people think that it is an easy fix and/or the included games make the deal a good one. After shipping, I paid about $60 for the Lynx II (great cosmetic condition), visor, carrying case, AC adapter, car adapter, and these games (some sealed):

Ishido (sealed)
Steel Talons (sealed)
Steel Talons
Tournament Cyberball (sealed)
Super Skweek (sealed)
Super Skweek
Turbo Sub
Crystal Mines II (two of these)
Toki
Gates of Zendocon

I figure that if I'm lucky, I can sell the games for about $50 or so. Then I'd have a busted Lynx and no skills to fix it. So I'm inclined to send it back.

I would definitely call that a defective screen, and something the seller should have tested and warned you about. I wouldn't have paid much for a Lynx with a screen like that.
