Fun thread! It's hard to seperate between individual games and hardware (or hardware/software lots), so I'll go with the latter.

#1 - Chalk another one up to a Vectrex! I had eyed them for years, always hoping to find one locally. Finally caved and got a nice lot with a dozen boxed games, and some homebrews. Great stuff, as others have said already. My two favourites (so far): Protector (stunning!) and Fortress of Narzod (pure fun!). I'm very seriously eyeing Vector Pilot (and would love a boxed copy of Star Castle, if it wasn't so pricey!).

#2 - Ultimate 1541 - II. Just got it recently (never had the first one), so I'm still exploring the pure awesomeness of this little piece of brilliance!

#3 - Commodore SX 64. Has a few minor issues (missing some keys), and I admit I don't actually play much on it, but it's just too fun to bring out when friends are over. I should bring it to work one day, instead of my laptop.

Now, three favourite game additions - that's going to be tough to come up with...

I had a pretty good 2011 - a testiment to patience and diligence. I spotted and picked up a few systems I wasn't sure I would ever have, as I refuse to pay high prices for stuff in my collection. I will pay a 'fair' price, but not a run-up, ebay-driven, unreasonable price.

VECTREX - Woo Hoo. After seeing the prices on ebay, I had given up on this one. The only ones I thought were reasonable were "Don't know if it works", "I have no way of testing it" type of auctions. Get real! No way of testing it?! It just plugs into the wall. We all know that is code for 'Doesn't work". Well, I hit one of those local flea markets just for kicks one afternoon and one of the vendors was selling a bunch of old toys. Back in the corner of the booth sat something with a tube screen in it. That always gets my attention so I looked closer and lo and behold it was a Vectrex. He didn't know anything about it, and all the other people there were more interested in old tools and cheap duct tape than video games. I offered him $40 on the conditon that it worked. We plugged it in and it works just fine. Took it home and cleaned it up and now it is the jewel of my collection. My wife and kids are still trying to figure out why I am so excited.

Working Microvision - I say "working" because I still have the one I had as a kid, but it sufffers from screen rot. It makes noises, but there is nothing on the sceen. I told my kids that for Christmas I wanted a WORKING microvision. My wife found one on Ebay with several games, paid $15 and her and the kids wrapped it up for me. It works great and came with a bunch of games. All the boxes, all the instructions, etc. Awesome gift. My kids thought it was hilarious that I was so excited about a game with a small, monocolor screen which is basically a bunch of dots with another dot bouncing around.

Original Odyssey - I got some money for Christmas from the in-laws and had decided to go against my principles and buy an Odyssey off of ebay and pay the ridiculous prices that one seller in particular has managed to create for the system (by cornering the market, posting silly 'buy it now' prices, and then the other, few, sellers just follow suit). After reviewing the auctions, I changed my mind. $300 - $700 dollars just didn't sit right with me. So I kept looking. Eventually an auction went up that was not from the usual sellers and it was an actual auction. I bid $130 and won the auction. It is a complete Odyssey in like new condition with all the stuff. Only the top half of the box, but that doesn't bother me since I don't collect boxes.

Oh yeah, One of the neighborhood kids gave me a working Commodore 64, boxes, cables, manuals and disk drive for free because his mom told him he had to get rid of it if he wanted a 3DS and he knew I collected game systems.

Now I need to add more shelves on the wall and rearrange the Man-Cave!

I only acquired 3 pieces of hardware in 2011, so this list is pretty easy for me.

Model 1 Sega Genesis: I had a Model 2 kicking around for years, but I never played it because the video quality was so terrible - especially on my HDTV, but still noticeable on the CRT I keep hooked up in the bedroom. The Model 1 is the far superior product, and when I finally got my hands on one, I actually started playing Genesis games. I even got a good way through Phantasy Star IV!

Model 1 Sega Saturn: I honestly can't remember whether I got this one in late 2010 or early 2011, but I love it all the same. I've only got a small handful of games for it still, but look forward to slowly expanding the library. The semi-obscurity of the Saturn in today's gaming environment makes the system - for me, anyway - a lot more alluring to collect for than the Playstation, without being so obscure that games are impossible to find outside of eBay.

PSP-3000: I know I'm late to the party, but that just means I'm going to get all the best games for the system on the cheap. There is a treasure trove of RPGs on the system, and lots of kick-ass remakes (Mega Man, Castlevania, Persona 2). I won't be worried about Vita for a long, long time.


And now another list for software!

Pier Solar: I honestly haven't played too far into this game, but the idea of owning a brand new Sega Genesis game, complete with instruction manual, clamshell, and goodies was too much for me to pass up. What I have played of the game so far is pretty awesome, and reminiscent of the days before Final Fantasy had an "auto-battle" command.

Earthbound: I received this game as a gift, and I don't want to know what my benefactor paid for it. It's probably the most valuable game I own, and also one of the best SNES games in my collection.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword; Zelda games have always been great, if a little formulaic. Skyward Sword is still familiar, but brings the magic back anyway. This was my birthday present.

5200 Space Dungeon - definitely wanted to play this game, and I'm glad I finally picked it up
Shadowgate (NES) - a game always thought looked cool, but never got around to picking up on any platform.

1. Coleco Kid Vid unit with Smurf cart & 3 working cassettes 2. All the Starpath Supercharger games (except for Sword or Saros & Survival Island) 3. An absolutely MIB Death Trap from ebay (No picture supplied so I assumed the worst and bid very little. Much to my surprise, it came with a box and it looks like it was just made yesterday!)

I didn't buy too much in 2011. I had a lot of crap going on in my personal life: moving apartments, new job, and such.

I did buy an old PSP in November that I use exclusively for 8-bit emulation and classic gaming.

I also bought an Intellivision with about 18 commons right around New Year's Eve, and I am really getting a lot of fun out of that.

Looks as if 2011 was the year of the Vectrex!

add me to the list… in mid August, I picked up my first Vextrex! I had never played one before... was really just a curiosity... I had seen one once in action several years ago, and didn't really think anything of it...
well one of my out of state friends mentioned that he had one on the way in the mail, and I commented that I had just seen one listed locally, at the price of $100, with four games. he said that was a good price, and I contacted the seller, and the following day, I was picking up the Vectrex and four games (five counting Mine Storm). the four games were: Berzerk, Rip Off, Pole Position, and Star Castle.

I got home and fired it up straight away, and was blown away with the games! later the following week, I picked up Web Wars complete (in beat up box) and in October, the local flea market had a bunch of Vectrex carts, and I've been picking up a few at a time for the last few months! I am now at 15 games! it's a great machine, and I usually bring it along when going to friends homes, and I am known to sit at the kitchen table, playing and showing off my Vectrex!

another 2011 purchase I was pleased with:
Atari 5200 lot with 32 games and many accessories... I picked up this huge lot for the steep price of $140 cash... included in this lot was some uncommon stuff: Meteorites, Masterplay Interface, Zaxxon, 2 four-port switchboxes, controller coupler, Wico command control joystick, Wico keypad, 7 original 5200 controllers, and many more games!

I guess my last proud purchase would come from early 2011… Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets for the Xbox 360... I was real close to buying a Pink Sweets PCB, but with the port being released for Xbox 360, I was able to finally enjoy a personal favorite game at home on my console!

honorable mention:
Emerson Arcadia 2001 - I was finally able to find an Arcadia 2001 locally with 6 games... but otherwise, I have seldom played it, but with the forthcoming multi-cart, I think I will be spending alot more time playing this console!

In no particular order:

LA Machineguns Deluxe arcade machine - love this thing with the guns having recoil and a large speaker under the platform to make the ground literally shake when explosions occur. Only problems with it are that I had to repair the motors in the guns which wasn't too bad, and still need to fix the convergence board on the display (blue is out of place, so picture looks weird. doesn't keep me from playing it though!)

SNES kiosk - Got it fairly cheap because the monitor was broken. Luckily it was an easy fix and recapped it. Now it plays great!

Apple //e computer - used one of these in elementary school. Now I need to get copies of word muncher and oregon trail to relive my childhood.

This thread is turning into the Vectrex appreciation thread. Seriously, I haven't heard very many--if any at all--say they regretted getting a working Vectrex for less than a couple hundred bucks. You already own two of the hardest "gets" in the library: Star Castle and Pole Position. Each of these CIB can sell on any given day for between $75-$125.

...and so far this year I just got a boxed Genesis, 3 boxed Gen games and also scored a Sega CD system.
