Personally, as soon as the ball speeds up after 20,000 I lose every life left in quick succession (not helped by that stupid beach house bouncing the ball unexpectedly).

Thanks! At 30k you get the switching ball / paddle as mentioned by others and I am still not certain what determined the ball switching color. Never quite figure out how to moving the paddle to the other positions would have made things easier or not as I kept it in the original state and used the same technique described by ChuckH previously. This games difficulty ramped up really quickly.
