I've never played a Lynx or any of the games for it. But I'd like to check it out.

Can anyone suggest what the best original games for the system area? Not ports or remakes?

Especily interested in RPG's, strategy, sims, and adventure as those are my favs.

Still in development but looking very good. Also Zaku (Not one of the genres you listed but a nice homebrew)

Asteroids/MC and EotB are both ports though, or at least available on other systems.

I'll +1 Blue Lightning, and add Gates of Zendocon and Electrocop. And don't forget Chip's Challenge - Lynx had it first!

Other titles I never saw anywhere else: Alpine Games (which I still need my own copy of ;) ), Awesome Golf, Bubble Trouble, Fat Bobby, Hyperdrome, Lexis and Loopz, Casino, Slime World and Zarlor Mercenary. I'm probably missing a couple.

Battlezone 2000, if you look up the cheat that gives you access to the proper version of the game rather than the severely watered-down version that plays normally.

Loopz...Slime World
Loopz has already been a Gameboy Classic game, and likely on many other systems. ;) Slime World I have recently found on Sega, via emulation.

Exclusive are the homebrews Lynxopoly, Yastuna 1, Yastuna 2, Pokermania, Championship Rallye, Remnant.

CyberVirus is also unique, and fantastic.

^^Pokermania seems to be much like the Gamegear "Solitaire Poker" - I have not had this one yet :)

Also the recently found Hotdog platformer.

Best unique games IMO are Blue Lightning, Electrocop, Lynxopoly, Cybervirus and Warbirds :)

Thanks for the help, guys. Are there just no RPG's or sims for this system unlike the GG and GameBoy?

Bill & Ted's is pretty close. Bill & Ted's has a complex password mechanism for restarting your spot in the game. Attempts were going to be made to release games with battery back up, but nearly all of them went uncompleted. If you can get a finished, but unreleased copy of EotB, you'd be set. But Daemon's Gate, Guardians: Storm over Doria, Dungeon Slayers... only big chunks of the first one have ever surfaced, and none of the others. Dragonsaga and Distant Lands are works in progress.

Now if we wanted to split hairs, I wouldn't include Lynxopoly, because it's an -opoly derivitive with a few of its own rules. For that matter, then I'd take Casino off the list - there ARE NO original casino games.... I'd also be on the fence about Checkered Flag - yes it's yet another racing title, but again, Lynx got it first (and then Jaguar).

I never understood why anyone would want to play an RPG on a handheld.

I travel to work on the bus and I like to play RPGs on a handheld. One of the good things about RPGs is that you can usually save your game at any point.

So I can save when I get off the bus then continue again on my way home.

They fit a battery into those Lynx game cards? Does it still work?

And how do you program a game for Lynx, what development software tools do you need? (I'm not a programmer so speak to me as a layman.)

No battery is needed. Its a flash device with a serial interface.

Have a look in the Lynx programming section there is plenty of information in there.

Hmm, didn't know they had flash memory back then, because the SNES and Genesis carts still used batteries IIRC.

I'll have a look at that programming section, thanks. I didn't notice it before.

They dont use flash memory original. EotB actual release was a hacked version from one auf ten finished gamecards. Original there where a battery, but the code was hacked to access a eeprom.
Lynxopoly was released by me in 2009 and i use a seriel flash.
If you love opoly-like games, its a great game.
Otherewise its worth to have it in your collection. ;)

Regards
Matthias
