Who'd have thought...a Jaguar CD with issues...

It's playing audio CDs fine, but any data discs (a variety of original games and burnt homebrews) are coming up with a question mark. The discs spin freely and I *think* I have the proper PSUs (not 100% sure, I need to go through my dozens of PSUs and check, haha). Carts through the CD cart slot also work fine.

Anyone have any ideas or thoughts as to what the problem may be?

Edit: Oh dear, it's playing commercial stuff when I sit the Jaguar on its side. Still getting read errors though, so play time is limited...at least I know it's somewhat functional. Anyone have any similar issues or potential fixes?

No luck with homebrew yet...

I'm not at all an expert on CD technology. But my JagCD had been working OK, then starting acting like you describe above. I ended-up replacing the laser transport, and it seems alright now.

You probably want to watch this video before deciding to take-on such a project:

Also, be aware that there is a tiny adjustment screw on the laser transport unit that can make some difference. If you mess with it, be sure to carefully mark the original location -- a little too much turning is way too much. :-(

YMMV -- be careful!

P.S. Does anyone reading this know where to get replacements for the "shock absorbers" used to mount the laser transport in the JagCD? One of mine got a little damaged in the action above...

I'd try a CD lens cleaner disc. It's probably OK with audio CDs due to the error correction magic, but as that was stripped out for Data mode it could be failing to read the data accurately enough.

As suggested you could try the adjustment screw but be VERY careful, make minute adjustments to this as you can do irreparable damage to the laser if you go too far from what I have read, or simply never find the happy spot ever again.

Good luck

It seems to be a fair bit happier now after running for a couple of hours on its side. Vid Grid ran fine for about half an hour while it was sitting down in its usual toilet configuration. It eventually locked up, but IIRC that used to happen occasionally with VG anyway.

Years ago I pulled it apart and put it together again (I have no idea why, I can't remember that far back, haha) and it worked fine...I was careful not to go near the adjustment screw. Fingers crossed it should be okay now, though unfortunately no luck with the CDs that CJ kindly burnt for me. Now for my next adventure to find CDRs that work (I've done this before, but again can't remember what brand I used).

LinkoVitch - your CD repair site has bookmarked :)
