My daughter wants a Wii for her birthday. The only Nintendos I had were the game watches, gameboy advanced and ds. Her birthday is at the beginning of April, and I don't think the Wii U will be out then. For $150 I found a gamecube compatible unit. For $111 (with employee discount), I can get one without the compatiblity.

Since I never had a gamecube, am I going to miss it. If there were cool games for the gamecube, I would buy them. The only game I know of is the donkey kong bongo game and that is just from seeing the bongos. My 60 gb ps3 died, and I had to get a new PS3, so I am loosing all my ps2 generation games.

So what do you guys think. If I should get the gamecube one, what game do you think I should get.

Might as well get one that's compatible with GC titles, if it's only $39 extra. There were a handful of cool games for the system.

Also bear in mind that there are a lot of Wii titles that can use GameCube controllers. Some games, like Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Kart Wii, are much better with good old GameCube controllers. They can also be used for pretty much all Virtual Console games, but be warned that the button layout is difficult for run-and-jump platformers like Mario. I prefer the GameCube controller over the classic controller because it's a better designed and built controller, it doesn't drain your Wiimote batteries, and it can be found for much cheaper than the classic.

Also, the non-backwards compatible unit doesn't come with a stand, and is only meant to sit horizontally, if that matters to you in any way.

I found a the Sports resort at Sears. It was $129 plus I got a $10 gift card for Sears/Kmart.

What accessories do I need. I have time to order it on ebay to get cheap prices. I guess I need the upgraded a/v cable and a remote charger. Are the third party controllers any good? The controllers for my ps2 and ps3 always lasted longer when I bought the official ones.

If you have an HD TV, then the component video cable is a must. I would also highly recommend a Pro-Controller as they can make quite a few games more enjoyable to play.

If you didn't get one included in your system package, you might consider getting a Wii-mote Plus controller. Not a lot of games require it, but those that do.... Red Steel 2, Zelda: Skyward Sword, and a few others..... really show the improvement in the accuracy of motion detection.

Rather than getting a remote charger, look into getting a set of rechargeable AA batteries and a recharger. You can find name brand (DuraCell, EverReady, etc) bundles that are cheaper than those special Wii-mote batteries & charger from Nyko and Performance. And you can use the rechargeable batteries in any device, not just the Wii-mote.

Other than that, the only accessories you might consider are those that are used within a game you are interested in: maybe a "gun shell" like the Perfect Shot from Nyko if you are going to play FPS style games, or a Wii-Wheel if you want to play Mario Kart or other racing games, etc. All depends on your interest and style of play.

There are a LOT of good games for the Wii, and not just 1st party. Hope you have a blast with your new gaming system.

You can always just get a separate GameCube system for $29 at EB/Gamestop. And it will come with an original GameCube controller, so then you don't have to buy a GC controller for the Wii. You can use it for the Gamecube and the Wii. Also, you can get the component cables for the Wii for $3 off of Monoprice. They are sold out currently but usually come back into stock soon. They are $20 at EB/GS.

There are a lot of good GameCube titles like Metroid Prime, Zelda, Eternal Darkness, Wave Race.

You can buy a pre-owned Wii system for 89 at EB Games/GameStop. I think the one with a Remote Plus controller is an extra $10. Or you can buy the Wii remote plus attachment for about $15 or get it in a bundled game like Wii Carnival Games. I paid about $20 for a sealed copy of Carnival Games that had a Wii remote Plus attachment with it in the box as well as a remote sleeve.
